Russian Orloffs

You are welcome to jump in! This breed is winter hardy, beautiful, and similar to its game bird ancestry has a semi-upright in its stature and great human relationship. I have found even cockerels seem very tame with each other. They should be tall with thick hackles [neck feathers], beard, muffs [feathers that are fluffy around and under their beak] friendly and with yellow legs and lay a light brown egg. Some call this cream others tinted. They are meant to both meat and egg producers but they have not been worked or kept to the same degree as many other 'heritage' breeds so they do need some work. At my place they are the worst chickens for being under foot. Last year we had one pullet called Fido by my son because he could go out in the yard and call her and she'd come running. It was a little silly.

Got some eggs rocking and rolling already:-) Yesterday was lockdown for set #2, 2 eggs were rocking within hours. This morning I found that one that was moving yesterday has turned around and moved its position in the incubator as well as the egg beside it! I'm guessing there's a cockerel in that one... I have a question for those that have hatched quite a few ROs- have you noticed a difference in sex of chicks based on markings? I may have read a bit about this on earlier pages but do the cockerels or the pullets feather out faster for ROs? I've made my feather tip guesses with the first set and was pretty good at it with RIR chicks but am wondering about the diamond pattern on these guys' heads. 4 have the same diamond pattern, 2 have a 'reverse' chipmunk stripe pattern with more of just a tiny spot on their heads.

In both pics chick on the left vs chick on the right. It may not be a sex difference at all but worth a try!

I just set eggs as well. I couldn't stand all the snow and "highs of 21*" weather we are having again so eggs are in and fake daffodils are in the windows just because. Mine are due on the "first day of Spring" so here's hoping.

I am collecting now... :-) Girls are doing well, out of four hens 3 eggs yesterday and 4 the day before. Haven't checked yet today, but need to head out there soon, don't want the eggs getting too cold!

I have seen a huge variety in chick down color, in large part due to the variation in e-locus. One of the reason they can look so different before their adult molt (lots of white, etc) then look the same as adults. Just a hint, turn off the heat lamp just while you are shooting pics, the red makes it really hard to see.

Lol, it didn't look as red when I took the pics:-) The chicks will be two weeks old tomorrow and didn't need the extra heat when the fire had the house at 77* so I put in a 15 watt red bulb since they went bonkers when I turned off the regular light. Brings new meaning to scared of the dark when they aren't used to just daylight! The house has been 75* today and I turned the red light off for a spell. Adjusting quite well for not even 2 weeks old;-) I just did some research and made some calls about shipping chicks so fingers crossed that things will be good this Spring/summer. I'm thinking about keeping mainly ROs for layers due to how well they are doing so far and their cold-hardiness.

I write this as dh is getting more exasperated and commenting more on the peeping....4 chicks hatched yesterday evening and another just got added to the brooder with one pipped and one zipping in the bator! Second set is a bittersweet success due to 10 that went into lockdown and (if the pipped and zipping ones have no problems) 7 chicks hatched. 2 of the eggs showed no signs of life after going into lockdown and one I think quit on day 19. It had been moving before but then nothing at all. How's it going for yall? Collecting, candling, hatching? Lots of things going on with signs of Spring!
