Wow, that's so horrible! I can't believe they were so awful and rude to you. My MM chicks got to my PO on a Sunday and the lady at the PO was GREAT. I got them right away.

I got 32 from McMurray and didn't lose any, even the one we thought was nearly dead when I picked them up. They're hearty, healthy birds. Their customer service seems pretty good, I'm glad they're so willing to work with you on this.

You might try sending them to a different PO near you,.......... one that is more caring. So sorry, that's horrible. I'd also inform your postal worker to not deliver chicks to your door, but to leave them at the PO for you to get.

I am so sorry. That just sucks...I guess the post office has a major problem...do some screaming, the squeaky oil gets the grease!!

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I was going to suggest the same thing that smith2 said: contact your congress people and representatives. If they are politicians that care for their people, they will demand an inquiry with the USPS. And find out how to contact the regional postmaster that is above your local postmaster. Who knows, maybe your local carrier will tell you how.

I am SO glad that I am buying local and from feed stores. I know the feed stores have to deal with the shipping but at least I don't. I can just go into the feed store and pick out the strongest and healthiest looking chicks. Some of our local feed stores have a great selection of breeds. This also allows me to look at coloring, etc to pick the ones I want. Last year when I got me EE's, I was looking for green legs and for each of the chicks to have different coloring. This year I will again be looking for green legs but I will also be looking for some specific coloring (at least the best I can tell from young chicks). I would really like one the is a white/buff blend.

I went and checked out the local feed stores, and saw a pretty good assortment of chicks. I may pick up a replacement NH Red, a Barred Rock, and I'm sure about a dozen others (I cannot resist). Talked to MM about shipping another order, and we decided to ship it to a different post office, with NO mailing address. Just a name, a phone number and a zip code. Also, we will insure the package. Maybe if the PO has to reimburse me for the purchase, they'll be a little more careful.

I must say, that the 2 women I talked to @ MM were VERY informative and friendly, and although my chicks (well, 12 of them) could not survive, I still have 10 hanging on (well, a little better than hanging on..they're active, pooping, drinking and peeping).

It was weird the way that they died...It seems that they died from trauma. The only way I can describe the way they acted was erratic and sporadic. They would flap in a circle, or run into walls, and then collapse. When I told MM hatchery this, they said it sounded like trauma. I even went so far as to ask if they were disease free this past hatching. I was assured that everything was OK on their end. The banties were only the size of a cotton ball, so it's safe to assume that they got knocked around. =[

I am really having a moral debate in my head whether or not to send out another order of chicks. What if they all perish? It would be on my mind that I caused their deaths! I understand the risk in shipping, but this is just an ungodly amount of mortality rate!

I understand your feelings about that statement.
I received my first order Wednesday (17th) last week, chicks were born Saturday (13th). 13 DOA, lost 8 more. there are 6 alive and well. MM sent 21 replacements. box says born Feb. 19th, shipped 20th, got them this morning. I called the main postal hub twice Sunday, no answer but I left 2 messages concerning the chicks. No one ever called back. I could have picked them up at least a day earlier if they'd only called me.
anyway, this shipment had 5 DOA and 1 soon expired. So i have 15 out of this box. If i don't lose any more I have 21 out of my original order of 25. I'm not gonna try again, just ask for a refund. My intentions were to have a nice flock, staggered for molting season, perhaps if a few of my older girls go broody I'd still be getting eggs to sell and next year if the BOs hatched chickies for me I wouldn't have to buy any more.
As impatient as i am about shipping, I know I couldn't incubate................

. I want the "ladies" to do the work raising the young'uns.

I've found 2 local hardware stores that are now taking orders for chicks. Such a relief, I'm not having luck with my live plants in the mail.
