Hi all! From my experience and observations, I have seen the very beginning of the development of saddle feathers is chicks as old as 8 weeks. I have not raised chicks in a while, and I can't remember when cushion feathers come in. We recently got 4 baby chicks and we feather sexed them and they all appeared to be females. Now, two of them have medium sized red combs but, the little Silver Sebright does not have comb growth, but it appears to be a little red. They are all about 4 weeks old. My main questions is: when do saddle feathers come in? On the chicks, they all have cushion-like feathers however, in the two that look like roosters, the feathers do not appear to have finished growing. They look like they are supposed to grow into saddle feathers, but they are only four weeks old! I am very confused so if anybody has a diagram or timeline on the growth of a baby chick's feathers, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks so much!

Seabrights are one of the breeds that has hen feathered rooster.

Otherwise saddle feathers start coming in around 12 weeks in most breeds.

Any red in comb or wattles that isn't simply flushing from heat or excitement at stated age would be suspect cockerel. Post pics for assessment, lets see! :pop

Ameruacana (If anybody could tell me the coloring, that would be great!) :thumbsup

In case anybody missed, they are all 4 weeks old.

I haven't heard of cushion feathers... pin feathers will happen through out all the mini molts they do on the way to maturity. Most birds will have their first full set of solid juvenile feathers between 6-8 weeks old.. bumm feathers always look fluffy like down.
Cushion Feathers are only found in hens and they are located in the same place you would find saddle feathers on a rooster. Thanks for the info! Are pin feathers just the feathers that don't look fully developed, or am I missing something? :)
