SADIE: Wing is off!!!! Pics

I do have her in a quiet room. The only problem I see is she keeps pecking at the part of the wing that is banded to come off. She pecks it so hard that it bleeds. Where the wing is banded is getting smaller and smaller so hopefully it want be much longer. I know she is ready for the thing to come off. The end of the wing that is coming off is hard and crusty. This part has infection in it but the part above where its banded I can tell the infection is disapearing. I will try and get some pics now.

would it be possible to put a cone around her neck to keep her from pecking at it??? More broken skin can only invite more possible infection site....Hopefully it'll come off soon!!!

then you need to collar her so she is unable to peck at it...
I sent you info (pdfs) and in one of those are photos of a few types of neck collar to prevent them from reaching an area to peck at it...use that.

Sara,
The vet gave me a collar for Robin Hood. Would you like me to mail it to you? I am assuming you could also buy one from your local vet. Let me know if you want it.

Sara, I found my young turkey, Dickie, this morning with a broken wing. It broke clean through just below the shoulder joint and is protruding through the tissue. It has got to come off so I wondered if you had any sage words of wisdom you might share with me since you and Sadie have gone through such a similar process? I am very pleased to hear that Sadie is doing so well and I hope her wing falls off soon so the remaining stump can finish healing up. My hat is off to you for the determination it took to get her the medical help she so badly needed! Thanking you in advance, Robin

I spoke with a large animal vet who is a friend of mine and she advised that the wing definately has to come off. Also, we both wondered which antibiotic are you using?

Have you tried calling Dr. Mccord in Bowdon. He is on Hwy 100. I just now thought of him when I read your post and where you are from. I don't know why I didn't think of him before. I used him years ago to treat a sick rattlesnake. I will be calling him tomorrow to find out if he does indeed treat chickens. I live in the next county from you just across the state line. He is expensive from what I remember though.

Sadie has made it another day. She is resting comfortably under her heat lamp. She didn't finish her meds today so I'm a little worried about this. The hardest part is the waiting. Time seems to be moving very slowly waiting for he wing to come off. Hopefully it want be much longer. I don't think my nerves can take much more.

How long has it been since you banded it? It might take a bit longer than puppy tails, since she is not growing. Are you needing to tighten it periodically?
