There is a salmonella outbreak in wild birds in my area. What danger does that pose for my chicken. Their food and water is out of reach for wild birds but I allow them to free range.
should I keep them confined or is it enough that wild birds can’t get to their food/water source?

Salmonella is passed by ingesting food contaminated by fecal matter containing salmonella bacteria. So if you have a lot of wild birds congregating in your yard, it would be best to keep your chickens inside an enclosed area that will keep the wild birds out and also from pooping on the ground where your chickens pick up grit and forage for insects.
