San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hiya!

I'm in Clairemont area. My girls will be 5 weeks old this Sunday, and seem to be feathered out--one still has some fluff on her head. I'd like put them out in the coop/run, but was told they have to be totally feathered out.

They sleep on top of the Brinsea heater now rather than under it, even with the window open. Is this a sign they're ready to go out into the coop?

Or do I need to wait until there is no fluff at all? Temps have been so nice lately, but is 56 degrees at night too cold for them to be outside?

Sorry I didn't check this thread out in time to make the meet-up. Glad to know there is a group of San Diego folks!

probably good to go the night does get a little cool Is there a way to set the Brinsea heater out there to do Night time duty?

they will use it as needed.

Excellent! Mine are in the bathtub (!), and although I take them outside to a pen after work, but some days it's dark before I get home. I'm thinking they would like more room for their chicken games. :)

Thanks for the input!

Yes, I have an outdoor outlet and a heavy duty extension cord I can use to put the Brinsea in the coop.

Thanks for the idea!

Just make sure the electrical connection is made water proof. .... Out of sprinklers .... yata yata. I just fold the ends of the cords over to make a knot before connecting to the extension cord and hang the cord by the knot up some how.

You can even drape a towel over the brinsea to make a bit of a cave dark place to get under for the night. there are some here on BYC that brood their chicks out in the coop with a heating pad draped over a wire frame.

Anyone looking for some cute chicks locally?

I am not hatching much this year, but a few have just hatched and I would love not to have to set up a brooder (yet).

So there are a bunch - may be a dozen. Mixed breed will all lay blue or green eggs. Cream legbars - blue eggs

Cockerel - cream legbar

Hens: trader joe "leghorn" , CCl x Croad langshan, seabright, cream legbar.

Chicks and $3 each except the female cream legbars ($15) or boys ccl are free.

Also limited number of eggs available - legbars $3 each, and mixed breed $1 each

I wanted to pop in and say how impressed I am with TJ's eggs. Two out of the 24 eggs got kicked out of the nests he first day and went cold, but all of the remaining 22 are developing. Fantastic fertility! I'm so excited.
