The blk silkie Roo is very pretty and sized well but I don't have any other silkies. He manages to jump on the Wyandottes though so I know he knows how to be a Roo....anyone? Free!

Chickens in Clairemont...is an enclosed run necessary? I have a fenced off section for day use (they're secured in the coop at night), but only let them use it when I'm home (they're 6 weeks).
Think it's fairly safe to let them use the yard when I'm not home? Part of it is covered by lattice, and I can cover the rest, too.
Is that enough to protect them from roaming cats? Racoons in my area seem to be pretty much in the normal nocturnal mode.
If you can cover the rest. Red tailed hawks are opportunistic predators. They thrive everywhere in the city. And chicken is always on the menu... Even if its just netting. Even the netting will deter cats. They dont like to walk on it.
And welcomeand San Diego chat....
I have a place in Jacumba but I live in Santee for the time being.

I have a family of Hawks living 50 ft away in a tree in my neighbor's yard. Once in a while a hawk starts eyeballing my girls when the roam the yard, but oddly they don't seem to see my chickens as a major opportunity. My girls are good at alerting and they have plenty of places to hide, and I will run out with a broom and act like a crazy person if I need to. My dogs also don't like the hawks so I think that helps.
Might order with you!Anyone have turkey eggs or poults for sale or interested in ordering/purchasing together (less expensive w/larger quantity) also meat bird order.
Also, I can raise them for you if you don't have the space (freerange on my farm) and process as well when ready for freezer camp.
I look forward to helping you.

Get your water tote tanks now... and fill em... Keeping them filled will be easy just a hose with a float valve. They hold 250 gallons so plumbing them for poultry use will be simple... they have a built in valve at the bottom. cover them with plywood or a box or a tarp to keep the sun from disintegrating the plastic.
But by using a float valve your water consumption will be negligeable....
I am dealing with a well where the water table has dropped 100 feet... scary stuff. If that goes I dont know what will happen.
