San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Does anyone have any 3 days or younger chicks? I have a broody barnvelder that has been sitting for 3 weeks and I need to slip her some chicks this weekend because I love her and need her to be done!!!

The strategy is... to wait till night time when shes asleep and slip the little-uns under one at a time... each one will worm its way under for warmth... She will wake up in the morning with Babies... I got babies... LOL... There is a chance they wont be accepted always the chance but this is the way to give the best odds.

So slip em under at night and keep an eye out in the morning

It has always worked for me. I think they are just so happy to be done. Have to do it at night. It is all her sister's fault she had to have chicks so now this one wants her own. Broody begets broody.

How about give her some fertile eggs from trader joes? It will be another 3 weeks wait thoug :(. I did that with my black star broody girl and she hatched 7 out of the dozen.

I just did this last week with one week old chicks and it worked perfectly! I had a hen hatch 3 babies on her own but got some one week old chicks to slip under my blue laced red Wyandotte. She was thrilled. The two moms are now co-parenting

You have to make sure the broody is getting off the nest to eat at least once a day....  if they go too long they can literally starve themselves to death.  BUT i have read stories about marathon broodies staying stuck for 45 days.

Yes I agree, at the very least they look terrible. I recommend a small secure pen with a simple nest box on the ground with water and food within a couple of feet. Your boodie should be very happy. I just had another one go boodie and nothing would get her off the nest, so she's now in the small pen with some possible olive egger eggs....not sure if fertile at this point.

Has anyone ever had a breed that didn't accept the babies?
So far I have done this with the following breeds :
Barnvelder , langshaw, Brama , Plymouth , seabright (annoying broody 5 x a year for the non setter. I had to give her away)

Hello! Two questions.
I inherited one and a half year old chickens from the previous owners of my house. I'm thinking about moving the coop. Is that going to be OK with the little guys?
Also I'm looking to pick up a royal palm or bourbon redturkey, anyone know a good place to pick one up in the immediate area?

should be fine.... Are you going to move their run as well? Keeping them contained for a day or two might be beneficial. I think there are a few turkey people on this thread... though its been quiet lately.

Good luck... OH and Welcome to BYC
