San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Cara, I am so sorry you have to go through that. I cannot believe that your friend did that to you. I hope everything works out for the best.

I need some advice. I thought I had a egg eater which I do. I went into the coop and found out why though. Does not make it too much better but one of the young hens is laying a shell less egg. What do I do? If anything.

Sadly, I do not know which it is. I was gone for the day and returned and ran to the coop because lately I can smell that a egg was eaten and I wanted to go and grab the eggs before my egg eater got into action.

I had one, started out because someone was laying a soft shelled egg. I just kept collecting the eggs as quickly as they started laying and eventually it stopped.

For egg eaters - I've read you can fill an egg with mustard and it will deter an egg eater after a couple times of them cracking it and getting a bad taste... I haven't tried it myself.
I have an egg eating hen that has been doing it for years - but she drinks vinegar straight

(and eats anything you put in front of her-hence her name "Fatty") so I doubt it would work for Fatty.
Anyway, she prefers duck eggs so I try not to give her access most of the time.

Oh, thought I better clarify, it was not one of the scruffy hens. My "egg eater" was never able to break through a regular egg. I would find only one egg that had been pecked. I think whoever was laying the soft shelled eggs was the one eating them. Then when they started laying a regular egg they tried but couldn't get through the shell. It was one of my EE's. She eventually either gave up trying or my persistence with removing eggs pronto worked.

Allison, There was no need to clarify. Thanks though. I knew for a fact it was not one of the scruffy hens. When they were still in quarantine, they laid eggs in the cage and rolled all over it and never tried to eat it. It is one of the younger hens.

I was so upset about it when I first figured it out that one day last week, I hung out in the coop w/ a stool and just sat and played with them so I could grab the eggs. I did figure out who was laying what so something good came out of it.

Egg eater? Once, I thought I had an egg eater, but it turned out that the Blue Jays were brooding near my coops and they pecked my eggs. Last week I actually observed one doing it. It is just the time of the year and I have to be faster than them. Check your birds beaks, if it is one of your chickens, you might find some egg shell or egg yolk on there.

I also have a question in regards of the Modesto Mill feed. Are the bags just paper bags or are they coated? I am reluctant to buy several bags of feed and store it for a prolonged time, because even the best rations will lose nutritional value. For example Vitamin E degenerates extremely fast, so to prevent deficiency, one should add a little wheat germ oil. But if I buy an already pricey food, I do not really want to add too much more if not really necessary just because I store the bags for more than a month or two. So even the best storage methods like mentioned here might prevent the feed get stale, moldy or rancid, but the nutritional value will drop no matter what.
That is why I am a horror customer for my feed store: I always ask for the freshest feed bags on the very bottom of the pile with the longest expiration date. However, I do have so many chickens, that it is normally no issue at my place that chicken feed gets old.......

Talking about feeding the chickens: PM me if you want some mealworms for your chickens on April 23.

Also, I am interested in buying some duck eggs on the 23 rd for baking. Does anyone have some available?
