San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Phage, that vid is both hilarious and pitiful:)

Cari, thanks for the advice. I only have four girls total for my 2 boys. I'm aware of the appropriate boy:girl ratios but have been waiting to see what happens since the Ameraucanas are still young. I'm thinking the boys are fixating on my Delaware because she is the only one laying/fertile now. The juvie girls haven't started laying yet and my EE is molting. Anyway, I think I've made a decision.

I had two roosters with 8 hens, and it wasn't enough. They were double teaming them too. Both were re-homed, and now my tiny OEGB cock runs with the layer flock. He looks pretty much like that video...LOL. But the hens have their feathers back on their heads now, and are very relaxed around him. He does a good job watching out for them all. He loves his big girls!!

I keep my Seramas in pairs for the most part. The males all pretty good to the girls. They seem to bond to each other reasonably fast, and the pullets stop trying to escape. If they don't struggle too much, then the mating goes pretty painlessly. I don't have plucked heads or bare backs.

Renee- if you don't care about having fertile eggs, you can replace the BW roosters with a little bantam rooster of some kind. You can have some eggs from my OEGBs if you want. Mine are very kid friendly, nice little birds.

That video was pretty funny!

Renee, my two Am boys seemed to have worked things out, but they have 17 hens between them. They both seem to favor one poor Salmon Faverolle... her name is Frenchie, but we've starting calling her "The Village Bicycle". (In case you're not familiar, that term of endearment came from Austin Powers: "She's the village bicycle! Everybody's had a ride.")

In other news, I am ready for chicken molting season to be officially over. Feathers, feathers, feathers!

My guineas seem to be molting too. No bare patches but there seems to be enough feathers in there to make a whole extra Guinea....LOL.

Its been cold up home Ice on the water troughs in the morning so I am glad they aren't stripping themselves bare like chickens do.

Thanks for all the support. You guys are great. I've decided that the boys will go to the inlaws' freezer camp. Unless someone wants them! When the time comes though, I'm afraid I'll back out. When I watch them free-ranging peacefully, I just think how beautiful the boys are, but when they harass my big Bridget who tries to hide under a bush, I get angry. I guess the time isn't right to have a rooster. Maybe next spring I'll add to my little flock and it will be able to support a horny roo

SunnyCalifornia, thanks for the offer, but I'll pass this time around.

Dfdesigns, is your Frenchie stressed by all the attention? That's my main concern. My Bridget is a sensitive girl.

She takes it pretty well, but she's vocal. Have you thought about going down to one roo and seeing if that improves things? Or is it easier to jettison both at the same time? (I fully understand.) I had hoped to only have one roo, but ended up with two... as long as things remain peaceful, I'm okay with it.
