San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Oh, I can totally relate to this, and I'm afraid it's only going to get worse as we approach November. To me the worst thing about it is how so many people are buying into this extreme stuff, in either direction. Why can't people just dislike a particular politician's actions or policies, without insinuating that he or she is the anti-Christ, or trying to destroy America? Culture of fear. Such a waste of energy, and disturbing to see how many people are stooping to this kind of thinking, and the resulting hysteria.

On the other hand, I've reconnected with some childhood friends I woud NEVER have found, or been found by, via FB. So this might be a bit time-consuming, but one thing you can do is click on the upper right corner of an offensive post, and choose the option to "hide" that story. It also gives you the options of unsubscribing from that particular poster, or to only see important posts (not sure how they determine that). That person will not be notified, and you can still look at their page if you like, but their stuff won't pop up on your page all the time.

I feel the same way... why do people have to get so hateful towards one another in regards to differing political views.... Insecurity or fear, maybe - like you said. I know about hiding posts, but it seems like too much work. LOL I actually signed off FB and don't plan to go back anytime soon.

I was just saying to someone that I wished Facebook had a political filter... it would keep things so much more civil! I do like many things about FB, but the political garbage, the constant security breaches and minor annoyances every time they make an update keep grating on me. I love keeping in touch with so many people I might not otherwise, and I enjoying networking with people who share my same interests. (I like Google + much better, but not many people will migrate over there.)

I'm glad it's going to be a bit cooler today. We're planning on rearranging some chickens and getting my current crop of bathtub babies out to the barn! They are completely destroying my poor back bathroom - there's poop everywhere.

But then if you start filtering you lose the freedom of speech.

If you don't like what people are saying either un-friend them or hide it, simple as that!

I don't think so... I wouldn't be restricting anybody's right to say whatever they wanted, I would just be limiting my own ability to be bombarded with it.

I have hid people before (mostly because of rather extreme bad language), but in most cases I like what people have to share the majority of the time and would not like to miss out on everything. If we had to hide or unfriend everybody whose political beliefs were way off of our own, I'd be unfriending my own sister.

I think a lot of people on fb hide behind the "if you don't like it un-friend or hide it" slogan. It basically does not hold anyone accountable (like they might be in real life) for the consequences of their words. And it's not that simple - I can't really unfriend my relatives if I want to stay on civil terms with them, but I also feel like I shouldn't have to read their slurs against other groups of people day in and day out or have to censor them - I would like to have them put their views out there, but its so offensive sometimes (not thier political views, I don't care about other people's political views - but the hatefullness that goes with the statements about thier political views etc) I honestly can't believe how little they care for the feelings of their supposed friends - and most of these folks also love to post about how religious they are - but they don't live a holy life when it comes to fb posts, thats for sure. How did people get to feel so entitled to be rude to others just because its a computer screen? I mean, if I wanted I could put all kinds of things I believe about politics and religion, but I wouldn't want to offend anyone, so I don't. For example, I am kind of left or Democraty and I could put things up about that which have similar insults as what they post, but I would never do that. I just don't get how they rationalize this stuff.

This is awesome! I'm so glad that there's a meet-up group here in San Diego!

As for my intro, my name is Sheila and I live in the Chula Vista area, I'm a native to SD. This is also my first time owning/raising chickens and my girls are about 6 weeks old I have 4 hens, I think, I'm hoping that my Faverolle is not a roo that would make me sad... Anyway I have a La Fleche, a Salmon Faverolles, and 2 Amerucanas but I think one or both might be a EE. Oh well, I love them all the same.
As for pets, I have a 8 parakeets, 2 are English Budgies the rest are Australian parakeets that are hand raised except for one. I've been raised around parrots, lovebirds, etc all my life without a bird in my life is like an empty space, just like a dog lover whom always had a dog in their life.

Anyway, I can't wait for your next meet up so I can ask questions and learn something new, etc. I just hope that it isn't during comic-con because I love going to that, it's like a family tradition in my household. This will be my 12th years straight. Okay I'm going on a tangent here, like I said nice to meet you all and I can't wait for your next meet up!

from Jacumba..... I used to raise Parakeets and finches. Parakeets are a hoot out in an aviary.... At one point I had about twenty started out with three. LOL and of course finches are like tribbles.... Using the Aviary panels now for the Chicken coops.
