San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

This is awesome! I'm so glad that there's a meet-up group here in San Diego!

As for my intro, my name is Sheila and I live in the Chula Vista area, I'm a native to SD. This is also my first time owning/raising chickens and my girls are about 6 weeks old I have 4 hens, I think, I'm hoping that my Faverolle is not a roo that would make me sad... Anyway I have a La Fleche, a Salmon Faverolles, and 2 Amerucanas but I think one or both might be a EE. Oh well, I love them all the same.
As for pets, I have a 8 parakeets, 2 are English Budgies the rest are Australian parakeets that are hand raised except for one. I've been raised around parrots, lovebirds, etc all my life without a bird in my life is like an empty space, just like a dog lover whom always had a dog in their life.

Anyway, I can't wait for your next meet up so I can ask questions and learn something new, etc. I just hope that it isn't during comic-con because I love going to that, it's like a family tradition in my household. This will be my 12th years straight. Okay I'm going on a tangent here, like I said nice to meet you all and I can't wait for your next meet up!

I love going to the comic con, too! I am not going this year, I wasn't able to afford tickets this year.

If the meetup is around comicon, dont worry - just go to the next one, we have them fairly often.

Hi from Julian! I got my very first bird, at ten years old. He was a peach faced love bird. I've had many different exotic species, but I have enjoyed chickens the most by far!! I've kept chickens now about 2 1/2 years and have almost 40  You'll find that I'm a "minor" poultry player in this crowd. Welcome!! You have a fun collection of chickens. Looking forward to meeting you :)

This is a picture of my chickens. The La Fleche sort of bends in. I have them in the house right now because this weekend my fiance and I are going to try to build a chicken run, we already have the coop. Wish us luck.

Best of luck with the runs! There are a lot of good pictures and ideas for both runs and coops around here. (i am sure you have already found them) The weather has been very good lately for chickens to be running around outside. I am sure they will be stoked to get outside once the run is built.

I have mine running around outside free range. We just trimmed up all the hedges and gave all our trees a good clearing out so there is not any underbrush. This morning the chickens decided that they were going to roost up in the trees as the hedges had become too sparse for them. They were giving me a whole bunch of "Bawk bawk BAAAAWK" business from up in the trees. I think I have been officially told by the chickens - no clearing up brush lady. They are hilarious to watch - you will have a blast.

Is it bad to have two broodies hatching eggs on the same day? I split up a dozen eggs and gave 7 to my experienced broody and 5 to my first timer (one got smashed, so she has 4 now). The chicks are due to hatch next Sunday. Last time around my broody accepted 1 week old chicks the same day the eggs she was on hatched, so I know she's open minded about how she gets her babies. Is she going to try and steal the other hen's chicks, or do they tend to leave each other alone?

I just did this...while I thought it wouldn't be a problem, one hen viciously went after one of the chicks that the other hen hatched out. I ended up having to separate them, which was a pain. I think it just depends on the birds. Some will co parent, others will gladly babysit, and yet others will guard her babies even again other mama's and babies (as was the case with mine). Hope it works for you!

I generally seperate broodies and thier chicks into individual grow out pens to prevent chicks from getting lost, tramlpled or attacked by other adult chickens. Its just safer and a lot less worry.

Thought I'd post on this thread to hopefully give these guys a good home.

Hatched two gorgeous Blue copper Marans from the Garry Farm about 6 weeks ago and they're needing a place to reside. I'm not allowed to have them in my suburban farm as you can imagine...... but believe me..... I would if I could.

Will post pictures as soon as I can get them to settle down. Will be willing to deliver them to you if you're interested! Just darling and have been loved, cared for, and treated very well for their first 6 weeks of life.

Thanks everyone. PM me if there's anything else I can do! Jane
