San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Valerie- I know it's not whimsical, but it cost me less than $200 in new supplies from Home Depot. It's 6 feet tall, 8x8 and my chickens only use it for roosting/laying. The outside can be painted whimsically and cutouts can be made with renting/borrowing the right kind of saws. The first picture is halfway through putting it together. There are roosts now on the inside and it's painted light yellow outside. I have a big lip in it in order to do the deep litter method, and there's plenty of ventilation (the left wall is wire instead of wood).
Whimsical is nice, but practical is much easier for cleaning it out and providing cleanliness and comfort for your chickens.

I had never built anything before either and seriously it was super simple to do with standard tools (hammer, electric drill, skilsaw)

The Leghorn and EE are just over two years, I believe. The Delaware I'm not sure. I got her from Cari hoping for large eggs, but they are average/small so I don't want her. I think she's under a year.

Randomly reminded of our Delaware, who laid extra large eggs and became egg-bound. I didn't know about the condition, and she died. I'm not sure I could have saved her in the long run, given how huge her eggs were. She was such a sweet chicken. :(

igotchickens: I love your coop. How did you do the roof to make it waterproof. I am trying to puzzle out what to do for my own. I am TIRED of Tarps.....

Since my coop is up against the barn, it's under the overhang so it never gets rained on. However, what I would do is take a small piece (maybe a foot or so long) of 2x4 and stand it up smack in the center of the front frame and one in the center of the back frame, then put an 8' one connecting them. That way when I put the plywood roof on, it would be angled. I'd just use silicone sealant along the seam and then paint with a porch varnish or whatever.

Sorry about your eggbound chicken. Luckily, I've never had to deal with that... but then, I have no large layers. Does it happen with layers of all sizes?

Sounds good. How ever its done I need it to be a technique were I dont climb a ladder.... My Coop is all Chainlink kennel panels. So I could adapt this in sections as I go. Each breed pen will be six by twelve. Where I am I only need three sides covered. Two for wind one for rain.
