San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

OMG i hope I can have more than 25! I currently have 23 but I am suppose to incubate a lot more. I will probably end up with 33 after I get rid of the roosters and I sell some of them. If I get a business license for selling eggs, chicks, and fresh products will that allow more chickens? I know where I live is consider agricultural area, but I still don't know about the maximum number allowed.
Thank you

I have adorable blue ducklings available and barred rock x light brahma chicks availailable and some silkies coming up! pm me if interested.

Been working soo much on the acre farm, this heat is killer, The silkies love their new coop, I will try to post some pics tomorrow of all the progress we are making. The goose house is finished and it is sooo cute DH did a great job. We are working on stronger safer housing for every one .
Soo sad my neighbor lost over 20 chickens last night something got in and just slaughtered most of his 3 month old chickens, he had them in temporary housing made with plastic poultry wire and it chewed through and got them. it was awful.
A couple of pics of some of our babies, geese are 3 months old and 4 months old,

Is there a website where I can find how many chickens they allow me to have depending of my zip code (92081)? Thank you
Here's what hubby sent me:
You first have to look up the zoning:

http://gis.co.san-diego.ca.us/
1. Select "Zoning and Property Information"
2. Select the "Start Application" link
3. Zoom the map out to find the general area, then zoom way in.
4. The zones are marked and color coded on the map. If you don't see them, you have to zoom in more.

Then you look up the restrictions for the zones here:

Hey guys,

I really need to get rid of these last two silkie mixes!! I wanted $5 for each of them, but I'm having a hard time rehoming them so if no one wants them for that, I'll just give them away to whoever wants them. I don't know if they're boys or girls, and I think they're around 8-9 weeks old (I never marked the hatch date). I'm going up to Julian today, so if anyone in Ramona or Julian wants them, let me know and I'll take them with me.

Wow thanks for the links I finally found the ""howmanyroosterscanIhave" link LOL. and I can have up to twenty..... YAY. but the other links are very interesting as far as zoning goes. My land is designated S92 meaning General rural. A residential and agricultural zone which is intended to provide approximate controls for land which is rugged terrain, watershed, dependent on ground water for a water supply, desert, susceptible to fire and erosion, or subject to other environmental constraints.

I need to get my parcel number so I can find out the specifics to my own parcel....

Thanks again.

this works only if you are in unincorporated areas, every incorporated city has its own set of rules. If you don't know your parcel number (on your property tax bill) you can still select your lot if you zoom in enough to get detailed zoning info. The key is finding your animal designator. I have found the only areas that don't limit you to 25 chickens are either way out in the middle of nowhere (i.e. Jacumba, my mother has land out there) or is near an already existing poultry farm or some other stinky farming activity (our neighbor the mushroom farm for example). I don't mind the stink, I love being able to have unlimited poultry.

There is a thread here somewhere devoted to San Diego County chicken laws, the info is pretty useful.

That is great info, thanks guys.
For those who live in SD unincorporated areas it looks like you are limited to up to 25 chickens for most properties.

Does this include chicks (thinking of my big old brinsea 190)?

It is tough to ID the written law for SD unincorporated on the subject but I did find this for Solana Beach, and presumably as it is pretty much common sense, (and humane) it should apply to other regions.

http://www.codepublishing.com/ca/solanabeach/html/solana17/Solana1720.html

From what I hear from some, a day old chick in SD unincorporated counts as a chicken, according to San Diego animal control. May be they should read this too as they do not seem to be sure of what the regs are for baby animals.

b. Young animals born to a permitted animal kept on the site may be kept until such animals are weaned (small animals, four months; large animals, six months; horses, 12 months).

Somewhere else I read (need to find it) it stated that young chickens that are less than 6 months, (and not producing eggs or crowing) are counted as replacement for the adult birds and are not counted in the total.

If anyone has seen this for SD unincorporated please could they point it out

I am still digging. I have eighteen acres in Jacumba and my nearest neighbor is about four acres away but all the rest of my neighbors are on 20 acres and built to achieve the largest buffer between neighbors. People who live in the desert tend to NOT congregate unless it has to do with food or Alcahol.... LOL.

We REALLY need to dig up parcel numbers and use that tool to tell us what the zoning designation is for that parcel. And it might be a good idea to look at my neighbors too.

My Property and ALL the property around me is designated S92 Which is a broad general use zone for rough terrain and watershed. There may be other restrictions like endangered species and such. If I remember from my plot map there is a 100 square foot patch on my property designated as endangered species area. I have about four Manzanita bushes.... LOL. Thats about all I can figure they were talking about.

So what works for one person cannot in truth be used for anyone else unless that person is in the same neighborhood or a neighbor.
