San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Thanks everyone! I did a major happy dance yesterday - it seems like I've been waiting forever and a day for those Ams to start laying.

Deb - that Hamburg egg does indeed have a slight pinkish tinge to it. (It is the cutest little egg.)

Dana does the Hamburg egg have a slightly denser shell ? I have one gold spangled Hamburg and her shell seems a bit harder or denser than most others. Almost but not quite as hard as a Guinea egg.

You know, I haven't yet cracked one of them open! I will give that a try and let you know what I think. (The dog will appreciate the experiment, since she'll likely get the eat the leftovers.)

There's a guy on the auction thread who needs fertile eggs for the NYE hatch-a-thon... I think Gail's offered to help him, but just in case I'm posting it here.

I am so heartbroken right now. Today was supposed to be hatch day and at the rate my eggs were going, it looked like i was going to get 10 baby chickies out of my dozen.

Sadly, this past Saturday my kids fiddled with the thermostat on my incubator while i was out cleaning the coops. When i came into the house, i found the incubator at 121 degrees Fahrenheit! I honestly have no idea how long it was at that temperature but I'm guessing it had to have been at least two hours. I cooled them as fast as i could and crossed my fingers, but here i am now, sitting in the dead silence when there should have been the sound of happy peeps filling the air. I'm seriously going to cry....

They have to be made of at least six sheets of plywood. 6 x 45+- lbs equals appx 270 lbs if they are half inch thick. Probably about four guys could muscle it up on a pickup truck.

If its 42 inches wide It WILL go in the bed of a regular pickup long beds are a full eight feet. The box is only 8.5 feet long.

Vanna, I'm sorry. :(

Deb - that's the problem with heavy things! I'm currently painting and re-making a wooden playhouse I got on CL into a new coop (it's on a 5x5 base) and even deconstructed the thing is a beast! And yes, I have a CL problem.

In other news, my dog-mangled hen is healing and will go back to the vet at the end of the week to have her staples removed. She's steadily improving but clearly still happy to be in the crate in the garage. I took her out yesterday to look her over and she squawked and limped back into the crate.

If you'd seen how lifeless she was the day I took her into the vet, you'd appreciate my joy at seeing her indignant and with some attitude. I've put a safeguard on the door where the dogs got out, so that I don't get a repeat horror show.
