San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Hello everyone,

cannot wait until tomorrow....... Have to work in the AM, so cannot be in Ramona before 1 PM. Hope that everyone will still be there?!

Do we know how many BYCer will attend? I was so busy over the last few weeks that I lost track, but want to bring a little something for everyone. Not expecting anything back, but I do have a "Green Thumb" and would heavenly try some duck eggs as well....

Cara, do you want to trade a few serama eggs so we can introduce new? I have 4 roos with 2 hens so definitely no fertility issues lol. I could really use that pullet but I know someone already asked for her. I was gonna hatch some more chicks, but I can save a few eggs for you and start my hatch after the meetup. I have As and Bs and only get an occasional C.

I can also bring a few silkie eggs for hatching if anyone is interested.

Has someone taken dibs on the 7 mo. old pullet? I might be interested. My husband is coming with me and is interested in getting another laying hen. I'm not sure what a serama is...

Ok, took a look. Too small. We're looking for a reg hen, I think.
and if it would be a good match with what we already have.

Hello everybody!

Quick post to see if anybody might be interested:

These are all pullets just about at POL- their combs are growing, not yet red.. somebody had been laying a couple eggs already but don't know who.

1 splash BLR wyandotte
1 from olive egg breeding- can't remember right now, either first generation or second generation back to Wheaten Marans. She is dark buff with black in tail. Has pea comb.
1 red turken, was an impulse feed store day old chick buy...

Large bowtie.
I can let one black pure NN pullet to go with above.. sort of want to keep her but can let her go as group. She has a 50% chance of laying green/blue eggs.

Also have a black turken cockerel in this group, but figure nobody wants a roo.... he's available though!

Let me know if you're interested in any birds asap, will not bring any birds to meet unless someone wants them.

I also have some young(not yet flowering size, perhaps in a year or 2) Amaryllis belladonna hybrids, those are not Hippeastrums. Potential flower colors are white, red, orangish, some pinks, which should still be different from wild type with more open flowers, face all directions etc.

Anybody have pomegranates besides Wonderful? I'm also interested in various summer dormant/winter growing bulbs and aloes(besides vera), especially bush or tree aloes & succulents..

BTW as for bananas- they have amazing recovery powers. As long as part of the corm is still alive, there is a chance. Keep the corm/roots on dryish side until you see growth then water regularly. My father has Rajapuri, Ice Cream, a plantain type(possibly Orinoco? it is unidentified though), dwarf Cavendish and one more I can't remember name of right now... Can't get any in time for tomorrow's meet but could bring some for a future meet...

Is it in ground or in a pot? They grow much faster/better if planted in ground. Looks like you might have ducks/shelducks? If you can, have their pond water drain around the banana tree, it will Take Off! when it warms up. Bananas are very heavy feeders, almost cannot feed them too much, exceptions are cultivars known to "choke"- flower gets stuck inside the stem- may be best not to feed those too much or rarely with too much fertilizer at once. Getting cheap fertilizer will do them wonders, give it same amount regularly.

Haha good luck with that- seramas are well known for breaking almost every rule about color genetics in rest of domestic poultry. Lots of undiscovered, not well understood 'new' genes in this breed. Makes them such interesting little birds though!

by the way, a friend and I have peafowl, there are total of 6 whites hatched out last summer available. They are at friend's place(more than hour drive north-east.. well away from direction of SD) so am unable to bring them tomorrow. Will have peaeggs and started peachicks and guinea keets later this spring/summer.

We're interested but afraid to commit!! Can you put up some pics? With me it's all about looks

Well, if you're all about looks, then naturally the Turkens are your default pick....
