San Diego Chicken meetup and Chat thread

Wow. Tigerrrrrlily, that is one gorgeous duck. I keep telling myself, "No ducks", but I can realy appreciate her beauty. Love the hairdo.

All this talk about Silkies got me thinking about the chickens we had when I was a kid. My mom and her girlfriend went to the feed store in Bonita to get dog food and came home with four silkie hens (Annabelle, Maybelle and Bluebelle) and a Rooster (Henry). My Dad was forced to build a chicken coop over the weekend. Of course, he did some research and found out that silkies really aren't known for large egg production....so seeing as he had a coop, he went out and got some RIRs, LHs, and BRs.. and then had to expand the coop. They still laugh about chicken math. This was back in the late 70's and I don't think too many folks had a backyard flock in suburban La Mesa!

Is anyone on this thread into gardening? I grow a lot of interesting tomatoes and other heirloom veggies from seed and usually have tons of seedlings to give away. Those seedlings won't be ready for the meetup, but I was wondering whether anyone might be interested in seed/plant exchange. I should have a bunch of tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, etc...in March timeframe. This is the first year I will have fortified chicken manure compost in my garden. I am so excited to see whether it makes a difference. I am sure it will.

I also have tons of succulents and blooming cactus. Please let me know if anyone at the meetup is interested and I will pot some up so they are ready for the meetup.

Happy Sunday all. We just moved our last kid out of the house yesterday, so I am sitting here enjoying peace and quiet and contemplating my empty nest

If people are interested I can bring along about a dozen SILKIES to the meet up. They will be about 3 1/2 weeks by then. If not will just put on CL. Will also have a bunch of other chicks. BCM, barnevelders, BLWR and some others......

Pretty Duck tigerrrrrrrililly! and obviously a great layer!!

Hopefully she will recognize duck duck as a duck, and not think she is a human!

Hey everyone- I would like to know who would like to be listed on our SanDiegoChickens.net website as a "breeder". If you are hatching chicks often, and wanting to sell them, or if you want to sell fertile eggs, whatever you might have on a somewhat regular basis (2-3x per year or more), send me a message with your email/ website if you have one, and what it is that you usually have.

Adorable duck Tigerrrrrlily! I'm sure you will give her a great home.

Those wood sheds are nice, and the price is certainly right! Hmmm...

I'm not a breeder (the whole chick hatching/raising thing still scares me); will you have a spot on the website for non-breeders or egg sellers, etc? Thank you so much for putting this together!

I'm in love with Leah the Duck! What a sweet story! I hope she and Duck Duck grow to be a sweet couple.

I hadn't even considered that. It's just not right! FYI - Carahamer, I took this photo of you and your handsome rooster at the meetup last week. It was a major hit at my office, where all the folks tend to take themselves way too seriously.
I also took a great shot of Duck Duck. Look at that jaunty tail updo!

Do you mean like a member contact list? or member pictures ? or to sell stuff other than chickens?

The "breeder page" is mainly a resource for people looking to buy chickens locally. I was planning a "classifieds" page, for anything flock related that someone would like to sell. I'm certainly open to other suggestions. I am hoping TigerrrrrLily is going to help me with some of the trickier things

, but I'm saving the hard stuff for last. If we can get a page up and running next week with the important info, we can work on upgrades as we go along.

With that said... Time and Location for meet up?
