Wow WMR, that's a lot of babies. I am going crazy sitting at work every day worrying about whether my babies are staying warm enough. Not to worry. So far, everyday when I check on them they are sprawled out sunbathing and napping under the heat lamps. We put a radiant heater about 8" below the wood shelf the baby brooder sits on so they get heat from the bottom, too. They seem to love that.
I find myself falling more in love with silkies every day. They are so sweet. I sure hope most of them aren't boys! When I open the big brooder door they hop into my lap and like to hang out tucked into my coat collar. As opposed to my teenager Black Sex links - one of them ran from across the yard the other day and pecked/pinched me right on the arm. I couldn't believe it. I think it might be raging hormones though, as they are about 3-4 weeks from laying.
One other funny story for Anke - The mealworms were a huge hit after the last meetup - all the chickens went nuts over them, even the silkies. Unfortunately, when I brought home the 2 day old Polish fuzzy butts a week later and tried to combine all the little ones in the brooder, the silkies went after the little yellow Polish toes! I think they thought they were mealworms (all the silkies have black toes and feathers covering them). So, for the moment the two groups of youngins are separated. Endless entertainment....
