Yep I do that.

I also refill the waters twice with cold water during the hottest parts of the day, and also spray the cages and surrounding areas down with water.

I guess it must be the heat! I had 9 eggs under a broody, due to hatch Saturday. I go up there to give her water and she has 2 babies already!

I just put three fans inside my coop, blowing towards all the nest boxes. It is HOT in there! There is a breeze, so I totally opened the main door and stuck up some plastic netting so the whole thing is a screen door. Water, water, water, etc. I also turned on the drip lines for the plants in the run; they dribble over and make cool puddles that the girls like. Everybody got lots of watermelon today, too.

Thanks for all the nice words about Caramel. I don't know what happened, although I'm assuming the heat didn't help. She was right in the middle of the pecking order, and seemed to get along well with all the others. I'm hoping it was just a fluke thing.

Yay for new chicks! I love that awesome repurposed brooder, too.

I feel so lucky to be near the coast. We get uncomfortably warm but not dangerously hot. I will keep my fingers and toes crossed for all the animals, avian and otherwise, who are struggling through the heat.

Any tips other than lots of water for the chickens? Mine are around 9 weeks. I have been giving them chilled watermelon, covering part of the pan to make shade and making sure they have a lot of water, but don't know anything else to do.

Thanks.
I always put electrolites in all the waters for my chcikens and horses. I haven't lost a bird to heat yet. I also feed big watermelons and wet down the ground and under the trees. I work all day so that's the best I can do. If I am home I also spray everyone down - the turkeys, horses and steers just stand there grateful for the cooling. The chickens run around a little but I know they have to feel better!

When I squirt down the horse she stand first on one side then the other then OOOh get my Butt ma..... The only part she wont voluntarily let get wet is her head..... UM nope not that one ma.

Went up to the house today and it had RAINED.... Temps two days ago were 100+ Today was about 75.... Whew every one looked happy and very vocal about getting OUT. LOL

Was so wonderfully cool in the mountains today! The wind blew all day, like a giant fan was aimed right at us. Loved it!!

Here's my broody Australorp who's been sitting on 9 Swedish Flower Hen eggs.

The first to hatch and the first from my flock. :jumpy I'm so excited!
This one is so obviously crested. Looks like it's from the mille fleur hen.
