- During the period of Roman occupation in Europe, it was recorded that their mining and smelting operations would blot out the sky with black smoke and noxious gasses.
- The American Indians were known to hunt out entire regions of their territory; it's postulated that's one reason many remained nomads. The earliest white explorers told of them running entire herds of bison over cliffs in order to kill them easier.
- The Dustbowl phenomenon of the 20th Century was the direct result of poor farming practice, tied to rampant expansion and profit.

Its obvious from these few examples that the Hand of Man can surely affect the environment for the worse. It is likely that as our populations grow unchecked, we will continue that trend. You can rarely have your cake and eat it too, after all.
Whether we are solely responsible for climate change, are on the cusp of just another natural climatic shift, or facing some hybrid of the two seems to be a matter of debate, however.
Some have said that what is needed is another scourge, ala the Middle Ages' Black Plague. This, they claim, would reduce our numbers upon the earth and wipe the slate clean. Seems harsh, although there is precedent for it. The recent pandemic scares prove we know it is possible. I always wonder if the proponents of the Eradication of Homo Sapiens would include themselves in the scourge....
Whether we can use our intellect to overcome our own immoderate appetites remains to be seen. I think it is safe to assume, though, that as we expand ourselves upon the land, something must give or be pushed out. In the end, we expect to remain the dominant species.
There is cause for hope, as more than a few things have proven to bear fruit in recent times, at least in the energy field. Nevertheless, we have much to do.
I certainly think we can meet the challenge, although it will require a certain discipline and control we have not exibited yet. It could could spawn the shift to Global Socialism so many fear - maybe thats a good thing. I suspect that there is a certain inevitability to that, as well
In truth, meeting threats to our well being is about all we humans have ever been good at. Sadly, it usually takes such threats to motivate us.

Of course, "cool" in Phoenix is relative. I lived there in the latter half of the 1970's and found that the word only applied in the abstract sense.
Too, the fact that it has been as cool or cooler there in the past makes one wonder how guilty we, today, are of change and effect...
Sometimes, I think we can only see what is directly before us.
I think the only permanent solution is to reduce the world's population drastically. With that in mind, I volunteer the removal of 50% of the populations of Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, Australia, and half of California.
