She stole from you as it stands right now. She took items worth money and never paid.

You make good points: if so sick, how come she can care for and feed her other animals.

since you have text messages (maybe email) to back you up, then you could pursue some recourse. Maybe the police with walk with you over to her home and be a witness to your conversation -I don’t know. At that point, with a police officer present she may just dig out the 70 euros from her possibly fat wallet and hand them over. She may get belligerent and stand her ground. But, at least you’d have a witness. In fact, I’d bring a friend along even if a police officer doesn't go over -you’ll have a witness.

regarding ringing, I’ve no idea what this is, but it sounds like it is important and now these ducks cannot have it done. Does this de-value your ducks? If so, this should factor into future negotiations with her: if she returns them, she pays for the devaluation based on full cost. so she got them 1/2 price already. if they are devalued by 1/2 due to the inability to ring them, she owes you that other half, as an example.

I’ll bet she does this sort of thing whenever she can get away with it. A person who is genuine usually apologizes for or acknowledges their mistake and she has done neither.

I think it is called "banding" here in the US. I suspect she used the cancer excuse as just that, an excuse to make you feel sorry for her. She sounds like grifter. We have a few of those here, too. If the ducks are of less value to you now, that they can't be banded, you have every right to demand the money, but now you may have no proof that they came from you. It sounds like a mess. Well; I have everything, except "not having wallet" on black and white. The made agreement; the costs, ringing, etc. But no not much else; since they are not ringed. The rings are on my personal name and adress; you can't just buy these; there is even an whole audition proces.. if they had them on; I could prove they are my ducks; they have my ring that is a personal as my social security number. But they haven't. I know which colour they are; but if she says "no, this are other ducks that accidentally all 5 are the same colour like yours"; yeah I'm blooped.

But I don't think it has to go that way; or something police-like; thanks to all of the people that untill thusfar replied here. Or like someone said before; it's not about the money. It's moral. I think I must go to her place; she probably will not pay or give the ducks back; but she will get a message; it's not okay what you are doing; you might get away with it often, but some people do and will come to your house; and tell you what they think; don't do it again please if you don't like it. She might think twice; and pay the next person. I hope.

At some level this still feels not like what I want. I think it is the children. I think I am mad what an example the children get. And how she involves them. And I am afraid to go there to make clear demands; because she probably will let the children open the door; and I do NOT want to involve the children.

as others have said, take a second person, someone who you trust not to get mad in your behalf.
Kids aren't stupid, I've got 4, aged 10 and under. If (and this would never happen cause if I had no money to pay I would say sorry I forgot my wallet, I'll have to arrange another time.) IF some one came and said "Your mom owes me money for your pets. I need her to pay me or I have to take them back." My kids would be on my case about it 24/7 because they know how it works. And they know stealing is wrong.

If the kids cry, well, it's their parents fault not yours.

then the only resolution is to get paid. Do you have a “small claims court” over there. It is for lower dollar value type situations such as this. If you have documentation, that should be in your favor.

She told you about and brought the children exactly for this reason - Sympathy. Now she is using an illness, that maybe she really has or maybe is fictitious, as an excuse. This woman sounds like she will pull every line in the book to make YOU feel like the guilty party here. You have EVERY right to go demand she make amends - But as was already suggested, do NOT go alone. Have a witness. I don't know about in your area, but here I can call the police and have an officer supervise while I retrieve personal property from someone who shouldn't have it.

That can be. She will not get rich for it. 50 euro's minus gasoline and feed etc. Since they are un-banned; there is not much of a "getting rich quick"-thing going on. If that is what you are suggesting. She could have sold them/get rid of them; but there is no market where you could get any dime if they are un-banned.
