One of my Jersey Giants did that, too. I didn't know what to do for her leg, so I put her in another coop with a low roost. That was a couple weeks ago, and now she seems to be doing ok. I hope your girl is okay!

I need another big coop. I have only a little barely 8x8 coop, plus the 4x8 coop and the 4x4 coop. Plus assorted hutches and lots of brooders and the tractor turned chicken pen. I want another "big building". Sadly, I could built it for myself but have ZERO flat places left. Building an actual structure on a hill might be a bit much for me. That would involve setting posts and building it up off the ground....er....too hard for little ol me.

Could you just dig the dirt to a level area?

Or have someone with a .... what is that thing called? a backhoe (?) dig a level area?

You really need to build a hoop coop. If they will work here they should work where you are. They are easy to build and relatively cheap. I think the most expensive thing is the hardware cloth. Plus using the same technique you can add a run of what ever size you choose. The hardest part for me is bending the cattle panels but once that's done it pretty simple. Though I will confess to hurting for a few days afterward since my artheritis and other problems flair up.

Kathy's on the right track there, Nella! First build yourself a retaining wall on the downhill side. Mutual Materials makes a great concrete block called Cottage Stone. Small enough for us ladies to handle, large enough to do the job when stacked properly.

Once you have your wall up to sufficient height and length, it's a simple matter of grabbing your pick-ax and shovel and pull the dirt down off of the hill to level the whole thing out.

Judging by pictures of your place, the lower end of your yard would probably be the most idyllic place to put it. The retaining wall probably wouldn't have to be more than two feet tall at most, I should think. Dang it girl! Why don't you live closer to me! That's a project I would dearly love to give you a hand with. I love building stone or block retaining walls and terraces!

Well, on a different note, sort of, I was perusing CG last night and came across a very tempting listing. Some gal up north of me is offering to take on folk's unwanted barnyard fowl for her gardens and property. She claims she is essentially a no kill shelter for unwanted birds, regardless of sex. She posted pictures of her place and it looks like absolute heaven. Chickens running everywhere, roo's and hens, pullets and cockerels. All running wild and free. CB, Brutus, Red and Goobey could be very happy there. I mean, the girls are EVERYWHERE!!! **Sigh** But, oh crap! I'd be so lost without all of my boys!

Don't anyone dare breath a word of this to Denny. He'd have the boys boxed up and gone before I could even so much as blink!

Hmmmm....

maybe the gal would be interested in letting go of a few of her girls....my boys would be very happy to take care of them.

AMY it must be fate!

I have to say the Del personality - i was mowing a part of the chickens field and they all freak and run into the barn BUT oh no NOT miss Bubble - she cracks me up - i was push mowing and she would follow me back and forth - a couple times she stood right in front of the mower like excuse me - you are not paying attention to me this simply wont do , lil weirdo teehee. Then her favorite lil dog came in so i had TWO lil weirdos following me back and forth - ah the land of the misfit toys i tell ya

I hear ya, Knox! Don't ya just love the personalities? They just keep me so entertained.

Right now I have an Easter Egger that goes into the baby Icelandics coop every day to lay her egg. She gets in there on her own and then squawks for me to come let her out when she is done. Then, I have these hilarious Copper Marans. 2 Blue girls and 1 Black girl fly out of the layers coop pen every morning and go to the Project pen coop to lay their eggs. It was their old home and they just won't give up on going back.

Yet another Marans goes into the breeder barn each day to lay her egg behind the feed barrels. Geeesh!

Also have one Black Ameraucana girl that is about a year and a half old. This girl insists on living anywhere but where she belongs. She has been hanging out with the grow outs for the past month. Each night I take her back to the Layers Coop, and each morning she leaves. Now that I rearranged and moved the grow out to their own pens, Miss Ameraucana is totally confused and squawking her silly head off. She is pacing the fence line this morning.

HOw funny and cute - people jsut dont know what they are missing - chickens have personalitites! Marans - i have no experience but i have read they can be a bit iffy i nthe personality dept.?
