Sebastopol geese - selecting breeding stock, color genetics, and color improvement

To get splashes you take a white male or female and breed to a solid color like grey, blue, lavender or buff. Then you will get splashes....

I really like the colored sebstopols and would like to raise some. I have a question though which I'm sure has been asked before but to which I can't find the answer.

I've been keeping my eye out for some nice colored sebastopols but have not found any within a reasonable distance-I've seen colored's for sale but not with nice vibrant color nor from a novice prospective very good type. I've seen some colored Sebastopol crosses that to me look nicer than the purebreds. Could I cross say Pomeranian or Buff geese over nice white sebastopols and then breed the offspring back to the purebreds? At what generation would they be considered "purebred"-if ever. Just exploring alternative avenues

IMO there is no need to out cross. There are good colored Sebastopols out there but you can't necessarily just go buy show quality ones. You pretty much have to seek out breeders and wait in line for maybe a year or two then plan on breeding your own "keepers" by selective breeding and growing out goslings to see how they turn out. Its a process that doesn't happen over night, There's no shortcuts and out crossing to another breed will only prolong that process. Most breeders keep their very best but typically have extras for sale that are breeding quality. I only keep a few goslings every year and do sell some very nice quality birds as well as older breeding stock. Other than that sometimes people just happen upon some nice ones but that's not typically how it goes. As fro distance a lot of breeders ship so you might have to fork out extra for a box and shipping if you are serious about getting good stock.

Are mutt geese the same as dogs, where mutts in dogs are generally healthier than "pure bred" dogs because of the bigger gene pool?

So they say, but in my opinion purebreds can be just as healthy as hybrids AKA mutts if they have been selectively bred for hardiness and aren't too inbred.
