I have to say they are a million times easier to candle than quail haha. But um... If they all hatch I'd have 22 chickens... Wow...

I got 8 silkie eggs due the 4th, maybe some BR due the 13th, and 11 Bearded Belgian D'Uccle due the 16th. And I'll be setting 21 more BR eggs on the 2nd.

Well after this weekend it looks like I will be sitting in on the september hatch along! With the saddening hatch of the golden lakenvelders (9/10 never started, blood rings... 1 hatched and died), the breeder was amazingly kind enough to send a second batch. I was expecting 7 eggs (she said her birds had slowed!) and *14* arrived!

So I'm pretty darn excited about that. This is the last time for the year... promise! AHHH

And in other news.... we had our NPIP testing done saturday (oh god, the blood!) and we are clean! Papers should be coming in about 2 weeks

And for conversation while we await fuzzy butts... Anyone here use Diatomaceous earth with their flocks? Any good stories? We just ordered some and I'm curious to hear more 1st hand accounts (I read a ton and loved what I've heard so far).

I candled all the eggs, 7 in each of two incubators. I put every last egg back into the 'bators because I really can't tell what is good - for sure - and what is bad - for sure. I did write "yes" or "no" on each egg as my guess as to whether they'll hatch or not.

Unfortunately, the only movement I saw was in two of the bantam cochin eggs in the one 'bator. NONE of the lav orp eggs had movement. There was 'stuff' in the eggs, veins visible, dark masses, etc., but nothing moved like in those two really active cochin eggs. (Day 12 for the cochin, day 10 for the orps.)

Each "clutch" had 2 totally clear eggs. *sigh* I still didn't pull them out.... I probably will at lockdown, though. More room for babies to hatch, if any are going to do so.

How well does DE work on spiders if at all? I have a friend who has major issues with spiders (issues as in she absolutely hates them and they love her house). I was thinking I might recommend it to her (I will any way because she is dealing with flies currently).

Well I haven't been in a hatch-a-long since June, but we lost a chocolate runner to some sort of animal the other night

It was my favorite girl too. Needless to say i am spending many sleepless nights in the yard with the gun. The ducks are safe in a HUGE enclosure and I am ready to hatch out some beautiful babies.

Here are my ducks:
Mocha and Hershey- Chocolate runner
Clyde and Claudine- Pekin and the female is some breed of white duck that lays a bluish purple egg ?????
and our not yet mature swedish/chocolate mix (not sure yet male or female)

So we will be hatching as many as we can get from them within 7 days, which by my calculations is 14. Then probably another batch of coturnix. But focusing on the ducks right now. We have decided to get rid of all the chickens but a couple and keep mostly ducks and quail.
