September Hatch-A-Long!

Wow, what a weekend some of ya'll have had! Been catching up on my reading here... Fluffy chicks, leg braces, gas chambers and the assist! (wtg btw!)
I've followed along as everyone before me here worried thru their hatch and now, it's my turn to fret. Eggs went into lockdown on Saturday.
At this time, I have 11 pips already. Some are not at all where I expected them to be... they are just below the air sac lines I drew on day 10.
I reckon they will figure things out. One egg has had the air sac on the side of the egg the whole time and I never could get it to move up to the fat end.
I fully expect a problem with that one. Any advice would be appreciated.
It's still fairly early, so I'm trying not to freak out too much. I just take a peek every now and then... keeping a close eye on temps and humidity.

I've always said that "knowledge is power", but around here, sometimes reading too much can make you paranoid! LOL!

tick tock, tick tock, tick tock!!

I just candled my Serama eggs (day 5) from my own flock. 4 developing good, looks like 1 quitter at day 3 and 2 blood rings. I'm still very pleased though, considering some of the eggs set were 2 weeks old, as it took my 2 hens 2 weeks to lay 7 eggs.

your 4 peeps continue to grow!! Good luck

Sorry for everyone's losses and congrats to everyone with new baby's.

I am glad to say that my first hatch ever (also staggered) of 3 chicken eggs and 11 duck eggs was a success. Most of the eggs were over a week old and some just over 2!

I successfully hatched 3/3 chicks a week ago and they are doing amazing. In the first week of incubation I pulled out 2 of the duck eggs that didnt develope (weren't fertile). Yesterday and today I hatched out the remaining 9 duck eggs. They are now in the brooder doing great.

I'm so glad they all made it. I don't know what I would of done if I got more bad news today.

Yesterday I sold my two bottle baby goats that I raised (they are 2 years old now). They were so friendly that they rode in the four wheeler trailer while feeding. I sold them as pets and the guy told me that they were going to his grandson and showed me a picture of him. Well come to find out he looked me in the face and lied! He brought them straight from my house to a well known kill buyer. I feel horrible and betrayed! I sold them for a good price and now I'm going to go spend $200 I don't have to bring them home to be safe again...

Oh my heavens. I have one more baby today. I had 9 eggs that were alive at day 18 in an extremely wonky, quickly thrown together homemade styro-cooler-bator. The temp fluctuations in this thing are insane. It never stayed at 99.5 for more than an hour. It dropped down to 85 and went up to about 112 more often than a little. I was sure I killed them all. I candled yesterday on day 21 just in case and 3 of them were still alive! So I fired up the Brinsea mini again and tossed them in there for temp stability. One pipped yesterday and hasn't done anything since, one isn't doing anything yet, and the third that hadn't done anything last I checked either..checked it a few minutes ago and there's a baby! EE/OE. It's the spitting image of a penguin right now so that's what I'm calling it, but if its the only one that makes it, it's name will instead be Miracle. :p

Penguin is fluffed and adorable-

I started to help the egg that hadn't done anything, come to realize it had died ready to go, yolk absorbed and all, poor thing.
And the third miracle egg...was malpositioned and was absolutely not going to hatch on it's own, so I ended up doing all the work for her..zipped, popped the top, chipped the rest of the egg, peeled back the membrane, even had to "cut the cord". I figured by my doing everything and getting the egg off her, she would be sickly or weak and not make it, but she's been out for a few hours now and is doing great! And she's a gorgeous surprise blue baby! Definitely, appropriately (after the homicidal incubator and the fully assisted birth) dubbed Miracle.

11 pips is awesome! If they are below a day 10 line then that is great. The air cells keep growing, and tend to move down the side of the egg that is facing up if you lay them down at hatch. I trace the air cells on day 18 at lockdown and the pips are almost always under that line and still in the air cell. The egg with the air cell on the side may be a problem - I won't lie. But it also may be perfectly fine :) Just decide if you will or will not want to assist any hatchlings - its not for everyone and there are pros and cons. If you might then make sure to read the assisted hatch article about 100 times till it is ingrained in your brain :D Remember that from pipping to zipping can take up to 36 hours. Once they pip and can get fresh air - there generally is no crisis - all you have to do is be patient.
