September Hatch-A-Long!

Update:

Penguin is fluffed and adorable-

I started to help the egg that hadn't done anything, come to realize it had died ready to go, yolk absorbed and all, poor thing.
And the third miracle egg...was malpositioned and was absolutely not going to hatch on it's own, so I ended up doing all the work for her..zipped, popped the top, chipped the rest of the egg, peeled back the membrane, even had to "cut the cord". I figured by my doing everything and getting the egg off her, she would be sickly or weak and not make it, but she's been out for a few hours now and is doing great! And she's a gorgeous surprise blue baby! Definitely, appropriately (after the homicidal incubator and the fully assisted birth) dubbed Miracle.

Awesome! Great job :)

Thanks for your response! Of course, I will assist, if necessary... I have read that article several times now and will likely be reading it again before this night is over! The air cells look good to my untrained eye. The chick that did the 10 day line pip has blown a hole in the egg, below where the first pip was... and more like where I expected to see one.
I can see it's little beak and see it moving, I swear I can hear somebody peepin' in there. You know I'm excited!

This is my first baby ever! If I can figure out how to attach a pic... (as if ya'll have never seen this before!) Yay! I did it!
The top 2 lines are day 7 and day 10. I did not draw day 14. The final line was day 18 before lockdown.
I opted to put them in the egg cartons... mostly because of space. There are 26 eggs. 1 - I believe is a quitter, but I left it in with a ? mark, since I am so inexperienced at this.
I am wondering, it was 12 hours from the time I saw the pip till the chick poked this hole... how much longer from this point before it starts to zip? I get the first one out of the way, maybe I can relax a little bit.

It can take up to 36 hours. They pip and then rest. They are doing all the hard work while they rest - absorbing all the blood and yolk and working up the energy for the internal acrobatics needed to spin around int that cramped egg and chip a zip line around the cell :) You are doing great!!

Lol @ "you're doing great". Ya made me laugh with that one. I just looked in on peep 1 and another one who had only pipped about 3 hours ago, has just about zipped all the way around the egg! I could not believe how fast it went! It's not out yet, but that egg is rockin. Peep 1 is just laying there peepin and wigglin now and then. Patience. Patience. Patience! Thanks for the support!

Alwayswantschics: I have the same type incubator. Still air styrofoam. To regulate the temp I put in several vent holes that I cab cover in aluminum foil and simply cover and uncover as needed

A 25 watt light bulb through the top.
still air is hard (in my opinion) you could get a computer fan and wire it in to help circulate the air what are you using to heat it?

I made one of these homemade styro-bators and can't help exactly yet because I have the hardest time keeping the temp regulated at all, but can say I put a dimmer on a 3-way bulb, thinking I could just adjust as necessary. The problem with that is by the time I adjust it, it's too late...it's already raised or dropped tremendously before I catch it and adjust it. It does also have vent holes, heck even a closable vent door, but same issue. I have bought a good thermostat and am going to install that today or tomorrow, after quite a few eggtopsies... Hopefully, that helps tremendously, but I'm not holding my breath. Also, mine is currently still-air, but I may try installing a computer fan to see if that makes a difference, too. After it all, though, this stupid thing (could squeeze in probably 40 eggs or so if I tried) will have cost me about $70 less still than my little 7-10 egg capacity Brinsea, so worth the trouble, I guess.

So out of 26 eggs-18 pips so far and 2 hatched!

One at 2:10 am, the other at 4:30. Wow, when they start to zip, they mean business! Peep 1 is still sitting in it's egg, but it's starting to look like it's neighbor has encouraged it to start trying to move a bit. Funny the two that have hatched were not the ones I was expecting to go first. Go to bed? Not a chance. This is too exciting! I caught some good video on my camera, but I sure need to figure out how to rig a light and a camera. It's tough to hold a phone and a flashlight still for that long! So, since I'm hatching chicks on day 19, if I understand what I have read about this stuff... the incubator was a bit too warm? Not surprising since my incubator is outside... in Florida. I struggled to keep the temps down in the afternoons on really hot days. I have already decided, next time, I do this in the house where the temps are more stable. Yeah, I said next time! I started yesterday on gathering eggs for my next hatch. I'm hooked! Well, back to the show!
