September Hatch-A-Long!

Just did a quick check. Can still see the thin red veins so they have not fully absorbed but not seeing any movement whatsoever. Not responding to calling of gentle taps to the shell.
Oh no, I mistakenly assumed that the hole was the cleared beak :( IMO you need to clear the beak. If the membrane is punctured you need to make sure they can breath otherwise they will try and may smother. I hope that hasn't already happened :( I had one perfectly healthy chick who pipped, started to zip and blocked its own air hole with its back and died :'( So the number one thing is they have to be able to breathe, and the number two thing is patience. I would say we need to make sure #1 is taken care of. Fingers crossed :fl

Got me some Runner Duck eggs ! Coming this week !  So Im in , LOL

How exciting! I was hoping for some runners this year but sadly since I didn't separate my pair of runners from everyone else all but 1 that hatched were mix breeds. I'm really hoping the one Indian runner who is now a month old is a female!

What colors will you be getting out of those eggs?

So far four beautiful babies and one more looks to be pipping. I figure anything after that is a bonus and I am very please with what I have!
There is a silvery black one, two tiny blonde ones and a brown with black stripes. They already have a lot of character!!
(Sorry about no pics, my phone camera doesn't take very good ones, they would look more like a blur than chicks..)
I am debating one more hatch in October but on the fence about it still.

I'm fairly certain it's to late for this one. I chipped a bit more of the shell but cannot find the beak and it is no longer moving at all. no movement in about an hour now

Unless its malpositioned (which is very likely with all the bator issues) the beak should be visible through some part of the top membrane without having to chip shell. If you can't see the beak there - look for the eye and then figure out which side the beak is on. If you can't find the head at all then you have on breech and it is a much harder save with much less likely success.

If you really think its gone, and I understand its likely, you can try touching it with your finger tip to feel for life/pulse/ response - to be double sure its really gone before proceeding you can touch it with a chip of ice for a split second and it will respond if it is still alive. If you are sure it is not, I would use this for learning. Odds are high IMO that if this one IS malpositioned others likely are too - possibly the same way. It may be helpful to explore and try to determine what position it was in.

I've set a dozen of I forgot what breeds they are. Sorry heidismom I am way too new to remember all the names. But it will be wonderful to find out when they hatch.

yours are New Hampshire reds, rhode island reds and buff orpington hens and the two roosters and a blue and green partridge brahma and a dark brahma! when the hatch and start growing I'll be able to tell which is probably the dad!!
