September Hatch-A-Long

Thanks for the sympathy, I guess I just want them to get here so I can start worrying about air cells and if I should incubate them for a while before I try to put them under my duck and if my duck will sit on them because last time she didn't and will they hatch and what if they need my help and is it getting too cold and how will I get them out of the chicken coop and how will they get along with the ducks I already have and how big will my duck house need to be????!!!!!!!

Just kidding.... kind of

If it helps you decide whether to give the eggs to your duck, Ethel ruined 2 batches of eggs before hatching these. I think she was just too young and immature earlier in the year. She would start setting then decide to hang out with the other birds. AT night she would set on the eggs, then come day she got distracted......

Maybe your duck is ready to commit now..

September Hatch -
11 - chicks from incubator 5 Brahma, 5 EE, 1, BCM.
Under Broody - 1 SLW, 2 - BCM, 1-EE

I lost a lot of eggs due to some bad shipped eggs from ebay. On day four the incubator started to smell. That is early... The eggs leaked all over smelled bad and were filled with custard. Had to clean entire incubator, and remove several impacted eggs. :(

Sad about the eggs, but always happy to welcome new chicks. The Brahmas came from Just Fowling Around and are beautiful and had an excellent hatch rate. I highly recommend them

Congrats. So what breeds are the proud parents? Curiosity ...

I'm currently incubating eggs from my Tetra Tint and my Golden Buff hens covered by my Partridge Silkie or Cream Legbar roosters. I can't wait to see what they look like. I'm really hoping I'll have a better hatch rate with my hens eggs than the mailed ones, plus I had to test their fertility. .. ;)

The hen is an Astrolorp/PR mix and the roo was an ORP/PR Mix that's what I was told but these chicks could look like anything! And of course you have to test out more eggs! That mix should make some beautiful looking chickens!

I ordered a couple of BCM eggs on my last hatch. One of the two that hatched was black with yellow belly, the other hatched with white coloring. We named them Ebony and Ivory. They both lay dark eggs, though ivory's eggs are not as deep chocolate as Ebony's eggs.

In the last pic, Ebony is right in front of Ivory.

Day 14 for me on this hatch.:pop

Cute! They turned out beautiful! Thanks for satisfying my curiosity a little. :) it'll be soon for you!

Officially in lock down...Added a few sponge strips that I soaked in not to hot but more than warm water... Got a few movers... It never fails, Temps have been steady for the most part but when I candle some look further along than others. Got several with a good dip to the air cell and can see chick pushing into it, then some that look like they need another day or two... Checked broody #1 eggs yesterday while she was off the nest and although she "should be" a couple days behind the incubator chicks one of hers has a good dip to the air cell and can see chick moving trying to pip... lol... Go figure these crazy chickens

Out of the 4 from this batch 2 outta 4 made it. The 2 that didn't make it are from the same hen and if this trend continues in the next batch I won't be hatching her eggs anymore!

Didn't think about that possibility. I'll make sure to keep track!

The incubator got down to 92 at some point last night/early this morning. I'm not sure how long it was that low. I have no idea if that means I'll lose the whole bunch or not.

92 they could still have a higher internal temp and depending on how long they were at that temp for they could still be fine. It really depends on if it was just an hour or if it was all night. Id give it a day or two and then candle. Hope it ends up being OK!

I have no idea how long it was at that temp. I went to bed at midnight and they were at 101. When I woke up this morning and checked them at 8 am it was at 92. I take medication that knocks me out so once I'm asleep I don't wake up lol

At some point one of the kids got up and got the wood stove going because I wasn't freezing when I got up this morning. This is my first time trying to hatch.

Sure hope they weren't to low for to long
