Serious Neglect Case

I think that is why people don't get involved with trying to do what is right by animals anymore....because people like your AC don't care. It's too much of a bother for them to make sure these birds are taken from the horrible living conditions they are living under and put somewhere they will be brought back to good health and appreciated. Our local SPCA is the same way. If it isn't a dog or cat, they won't respond. I have no advice for you, but I do want you to know that I give you a lot of credit for doing what nobody else would, try your best to get them a decent home. Don't give up...I, for one, believe in Karma, and someday he will get his. :)

I don't have a particular advice, but just want to say that I think you are a hero. The world needs more people like you. I do like the newspaper article idea - it could be done early next semester, even if he has gotten rid of all the poultry, because he will probably get more in the future. Once he is exposed past neglect of abuse, others are more likely look into it in the future, and intervene if necessary. It's always hard to be the first one to blow the whistle, as you are trying to do, but once that is done, others can just be your followers. It's so much easier to be a follower than a leader. Best of luck, and please keep us posted.

I work for our local humane society. If this were reported to us, our field investigator would be all over this; an unannounced visit would happen, and charges would likely be filed (as well as the affected animals confiscated.) Is there a humane society near you? Who deals with cruelty investigations? Our animal control is worthless, and I would never think to call them for something like this.

Good luck. I think people like this should be appropriately punished (put in a cell with no food and one bucket of dirty water.)

i would call the board of health. tell them you are concerned that breathing in the dander or other bird diseases anyone and their pets living nearby. they should help you anonomously and advise you into your best options. they may send a building inspector over. i think they will get the chickens help faster. i hope this helps.

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the late reply, I've actually been sick. I think all the stress from this contributed to me coming down with the flu and a sinus infection for the second time in so many months.

I left Friday evening and have been at my family's house since then. The land lord was supposed to be by Saturday and bring all this up to CK. The land lord was also supposed to give me a call to tell me what happened but he hasn't, so as soon as I get my voice back, I will be calling him. I literally have been in bed sick but have been having nightmare about this. It is weighing on me pretty heavily because I guess I got my hopes up too high.

My next plan of action is to call AC back if the land lord does not make this right. I will tell AC that I plan of pursuing this as far as it will go. Then I will go to our local SPCA as ours is pretty good. I don't know why I didn't think of them before. Unfortunately we don't have an Humane Society. I will also blast the photographic and video evidence to as many people as I can and possibly the media. My only goal is to help these and any future animals but if I have to drag a few people through the mud, then I will. I am tired of playing.

The only thing I have to worry about is that my belongings are still at the house (although I put all my stuff in my room and took pictures in case anybody gets sticky fingers) and the land lord has yet to return my security deposit. I would like the security deposit back but if I have to give that up because I piss some people off, well so be it. I do have to return to the property to get my belonging though and that is what I worry about.

why dont you take all these poor animals to an animal shelter and pretended there was a break in .i wouldn't be able to handle living there and would of taken this action asap.Poor animals can't help themselves. This is my favourite quote ' Never , never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wound we afflict on our Soul when we look the other way'
I would just call the police and perhaps the university's poultry science dept. Taking a dog in NC is a Felony, so not such a small punishment.

Post all the pictures and video link on tumblr and reddit with the number for the AC and state that they are not doing anything to help. You want to see AC care. They will after they get a 1000 plus phone calls. When all else fails crowd source, you have the proof post it to every social media site you can think of if your local paper won't pick up the story the online community sure will. If you have pictures and videos of what has happened they should be able to do something.

I will also keep the county code thing in mind. Another thing I just thought about is the fact that he has mallards and wood ducks and someone told me there are extra rules for having those guys. I just don't know who to contact about them.

I still can't talk today but I think I will at least have my voice back by tomorrow and then I will call the landlord. At that point I will know what further steps I have to take.
If it comes to blasting this evidence all over the place, I will be sure to let you guys know so you can pass the word along.

Some states require special permits to owns wood ducks and mallards.
