Serious problem! Update pg 7.She's home.

Yes, it’s strange what they do and what they eat sometimes and we cannot predict everything. I’d bet nearly every person here has a pan of oyster shell and granite in their coop, and this is an odd circumstances that has no one to blame. It does seem odd that it didn’t stay in her crop, or that she ate more than would stay in her crop.

She could have been shoved away from other feed by a ‘higher up’ hen, or been nervous about something and started gulping what she was near, or decided some other chick was “NOT going to get this gravel, it’s MINE !!!” err, hers… chicken psychology is beyond most of us, don’t drive yourself crazy over this.

We could dissect this for a year and a day and it wouldn’t help much of anything. You noticed it, and are seeing that she’s cared for. It’s all anyone could have done.

Update: I just called the vet this morning and she said she's doing a little better. She hasn't passed any of the stone yet but her stool is becoming greener but still liquidy. She's anemic from all the blood loss internally. I asked the vet if the bleeding had stopped but he doesn't know yet. She did say she has parasites in her stool with I was very mad about since I just wormed them about 2 weeks ago with stuff I bought at a poultry show! The vet said she was going to be put back on oxygen for the time being. She's on all sorts of antibotics, fluid, and everything. I took today off from school cause I couldn't sleep at all tonight. The cost of all this will probably go up to $600 atleast. She my favorite girl(even though she has bow legs). I just hope she pulls through thins. I'm a little worried about the other two now since she has parasites in her stool which I'm guessing the others do to. Is there anything from TSC I could buy to treat them with? The male Kernal has been crowing very squeaky today so now I'm worried about him to. He might have to go in for a check-up after this then to. I just hope Sandy get better and is able to come home soon.

Did the vet say what type of worms she had? If she has just roundworms, then Wazine will work, just repeat treatment in 10 days.
Levasole powder (sp?) is a pig wormer is used for tapeworm, gapeworm & gets some roundworms in chickens.

I hope Sandy gets better soon, sounds like your vet is doing a good job. Best wishes, Miriam

Happy to hear she's hanging in there!! Could the worms be causing her symptoms I wonder??? Hope they are treating her for that asap!!

I'm glad she's doing better today!!

I had a sick pullet that I took to my avian vet this past fall; I'd noticed she was eating lots more grit than most of the others, but dismissed it. Then, about a month later, she began to get ill (unrelated to her digestive tract). The vet and I had a long conversation, with me shooting questions to her left and right...trying to find out what may be wrong with her. One of the things the vet said made a huge impression on me - she said that when a chicken is not feeling well, they assume they need to eat something different to make themselves feel better. That's when they will begin eating way too much grit, or oyster shell, or shavings. It made perfect sense to me, and I'm ever more watchful of this sort of behavior.

Maybe your girl at too much grit because something ELSE was making her feel sick?? Just something to think about...

Yeah, not all wormers work on the same worms. Best to find out the types of worms she has and treat accordingly. Worms and the treatment of worms can and do cause internal bleeding, with the overeating of stones probably just as a secondary issue.

Now I know not to trust people selling wormers at chicken shows. The bottle said treats all cases of worms. Dumb me I should of kept the bottle. I tried calling again to see how she was doing but they were already closed. My mom said if she has to have surgery she won't pay it thus the vet will have to put her down..which I'm homing to god not. The other to are still depressed and the roo isn't eating very much but he's still active and healthy. I'm praying she will come out of this without having to go through surgery.
