Seriously? The ER? For that?

Was your son okay? He's adorable by the way

he was almost 5 months old in that pic , he had surgry on his throat. Because of the growth in his throat and later becuase of the scar tissue and stuff from surgry he didnt like to take a bottle he would litterly drink 1-2 ounces at a time or even less and for almost 2 years after this happend he would stop eating and drinking when he got sick , even if it was a mild bug , and becuase he ate and drank so little to begin with we spent much time in the ER and in the hopital , once he was dehydrated enough hes O2 saturations would go down as well, Usually when we were in the ER he may seem like he had a cold no more but he was really a very sick child that usually needed IV fluids at least and hospitalzation alot of the time.

gabrielle, I too see this abuse of the system everyday in the hospital where I work, but I think you are being an advocate for the wrong reasons. Your reasons are appropriate for your situation, but many think they're situation is the same as yours and its not even close.
Noone is saying kids who are sick shouldnt be taken to the ER. It's more like tattoo girl, paper cuts, etc. ppl that should be seen in an office or CLINIC. And even so, as a Mom I feel confident in saying I agree young kids with sickness should be in the ER if it's after hours, etc HOWEVER, once kids are 4, 5, 6, and so on...as their parent...YOU SHOULD RECOGNIZE that your kid is sick for gosh sakes LONG before it gets to the point of dehydration, etc and they should have been in the OFFICE long before it gets to that point. In my personal opinion unless a child of that age has a skyrocketing fever past 105, (yes PAST 105...temps that high are PERFECTLY normal in children) or are not peeing (due to dehydration) they shouldnt be going to the ER. Suck it up and stick it out and take them to the office asap. Kids get sick. usually symptoms are much worse or seem much worse at night- often after office hours. Parents need to learn to take care of their sick kids. And any parent that cant take 2 seconds to notice their child is getting sick is a poor parent. Just my opinion I know, but this is the one thing as a nurse and as a Mom that I see on a daily business that makes me irate. If you call ur office and the DOCTOR on call isn't concerned enough to have you go to the ER, then you shouldnt be either!

I completely agree that you don't always know the whole story, but with these people, it wasn't just the kids. They were complaining that they, the parents, also had the sniffles and felt that warrented a trip to the ER

I cant believe a person went to the ER because their new tattoo hurt.. I got a tattoo about the size of a silver dollar, and about 3 hours after getting it.. I forgot I even had it.. Either they were a wimp.. Or they got a tattoo at a illegal tattoo shop.. I am still in disbelief.. That is a good one to put in the book of stupid ER visits... Some one should write one..

I hope your son is ok.. My niece used to have attacks too.. But she out grew them by 2 years old.. But they could come back..

Boy am I glad I am in the UK, although our ER's are usually busy, we have triage nurses to evaluate you first... sick children take precedence..... plus we are all aware that you don't use it like a Dr's surgery.....

Yea, I had West Nile and had to sit in the ER waiting room in a wheel chair w/ my mom(I was 16) for a long long time, I don't remeber as I was in and out... Supposedly there was a guy with a cut and that was it other than me and they still took hours to see me, obviously they thought I had a cold

... When they triaged me my temp was 107.3!!! All I remeber is the doc taking my med record over his face and telling my mom "it doesn't look good" and " I don't know if she is going to make it" YAH thanks alot doc I'm not dead yet, I can still hear!!! I hate hospitals!!! I hope your son is feeling better!~

Tattoo girl needs a life lol I have two one of them covers my entire right side and I'm sorry she must've been a moron, "hey let me get this ink imprinted on me forever painless and all, I hope they use cotton balls to do it so it hurts less..."

Oh I hear ya...I flew into a fit one night in an ER with my daughter when she was 6...she was having a horrible asthma attack, medication not cutting it...we sat in the waiting room for 2 hours and I had warned the triage nurse that if she started retracting when she was breathing I would tear the ER apart. well she starting retracting and I picked her up and marched through the doors into the back ...there was a young soldier sitting there with his ankle wrapped and I looked at him and said "Is that your only injury?" he said "yes maam" I said move your butt NOW. He jumped over, I laid her down, put her medication in their nebulizer and started treating her. This major came up and told me I cuold not do that....I came unglued. Four MPs, a SGM, 2 Majors and 3 captains later..they left me the hell alone. Several days later that same SGM told my DH that he would rather go back to Iraq than face me again over my child. I was beyond furious!

I sat there watching people go in before her that ranged from kids scraped knees to nose bleeds and here she was seconds from ceasing to breath. On a military base there is no insurance issue or lack of doctors to see but the ER is for emergencies not scraped knees.

I watched a soldier sitting in a wheelchair waiting for hours following a jump accident...he died waiting and no one noticed he was distressed. I told the nurse several times he needed to be seen...they ignored me. When they came to get him FINALLY, he has expired. Thankfully I was in the back and was not witness to that scene because I would have came unglued then too.

Oh I hear ya and understand completely how infuriating it is.

Around here regular docs won't even accept you as a patient unless you have insurance. You can have the cash in your hot little hand and it does not matter. No insurance? You can't even be on their patient list. There is no walk-in, doc-in-a-box kind of clinic, so you really have no other options. It's the ER or take-your-own-best-guess-at what's-wrong. Maybe that's why I haven't been to a real doctor in years.

Oh this doesnt work very well
let me explain:
I was on the phone with the dr's office many many times in a 4 day period with my oldest GDaughter, they kept telling me that its just the flu no biggie just give her fluids, ok fine did that repeatedly, everytime she took in fluids she would be in the bathroom voiding fluid,.
this went on for 4 days, finlly I got an office worker with this attitude you have, finally I had to get nasty and tell them if they didnt see her asap that I would take her to the er and IF there was any significant issue I would sue her personally then the drs office.
Finally I was given an appointment for 10 am ( I called at 8 am mind you), I headed over right then and there I wasnt waiting.
Dr comes in and OMG there is a huge issue, the 10 year old was diagnosed Diabetic,
They made me wait 4 days to be seen, she could have easily died of dehydration and was very close to being comatose.
In the 4 days she was deathly ill she lost 14 lbs!
Do you think I am ever going to listen to a dr or an office worker or a triage nurse again NOT LIKELY.
2 months ago Noro Virus whacked her, whats the first thing the Dr's office said, " Take her to the ER" 6 hours later she was life flighted to the nearest Major Hospital. Ketoacidosis, all with in a 6 hour window.
The problem is this office does not take serious illnesses seriously. they push it off on the ER.
