Thanks! Not my first time, been hatching for a little while now. Not a seasoned pro yet though.

I have 6 Orp eggs in there at the moment. 3 are shipped eggs from a BYC member and 3 are projects of my own.

I'm still waiting on a few of my girls to start laying before I can really start hatching this year.

These are my first chicks of 2011.....the incubators have been quiet for the winter and I was getting the itch to hatch! So these are to hold me over. lol.

And I'm with you....... it IS nerve racking!

I did 2 hatches last year in my bator, before that, just let the hens do it!!! Yeah I was getting the itch to hatch some too!!

Hoping to get a nice pair for my son to show at fair. He won with the parents last year as a cockerel and pullet. He will take them back this year as rooster and hen. So hoping I get a nice pair for him to take this year as a cockerel and pullet!

That's great! Congrats on last years win! I've been thinking about doing the same thing with my youngest son. He's 12 and needs a hobby besides the stupid video games and he likes the chickens. Our county fair this year is 4/1-9th. I think we'll go and see if he's interested.

If he is interested though, we'll both have some learning to do! I've never shown and have no idea what's involved. Have you been showing long?

ok so i have some questions...this is my first sucessful hatch. my 1st actual hatch went terrible!! out of 6 none hatched! 3 were in a mini incubator, 2 in a cardboard incubator and 1 under a hen. this time i bought myself a Lg with a turner (spend tons on them but i needed a bator) and i currently have 24 in there. i candeled and all but 7 have something in them. out of the 7 only 1 has a blood ring so i guess the other 6 werent fertile at all.

anyway my questions... if i put them in my bator at 6 pm on feb 5th....when will they lock down? and when will they hatch?

also my humibity has been locked on about 45 the whole time and my temp has been locked on 101-102.... its still air btw.

thanks in advance!!

Samantha

my son has been showing since he was 6 and he is 13 now. He loves the chickens and they are a pretty easy project! He also shows pigs. I think your son should check it out!!! I think he would love it.

WOW your fair is early!!! ours is the 3rd week in July !

Samantha,
I put mine in the bator on the morning of 2/5. So I am just gonna lockdown tomorrow morning. Even though you didn't put them in the bator till evening , I think you would be safe to lockdown at anytime tomorrow. I would bump up your humidity a little bit, maybe 55, just a thought

Thanks smchickfarm! so i should take them out of the turner tomorrow right? and raise the humidity to around 60 (thats what i heard) also when should i give up on the ones that havent hatched? id like to reload my bator on the 28th...is that too soon??

Our fair is the last week of august and the county next to us is the 1st week of august and i thought they were early.

First time incubating and hatch day is the 25th. I was thinking to lockdown the morning of the 23, is that right? I set them on the 5th. I am very nervous about it. My biggest fear is that the humidity won't come up and I'll have to open it to add water. Well that and that no one will hatch.

Glad to have you along

You should lockdown on day 18, which would be tomorrow. I don't know what kind of bator you have, but you should fill up your water source and then lockdown. If you have to open to add water during lockdown, you will be ok, just do it quick. You just don't want to open the bator unless you have too.

I know it is nerve racking.........

that is why this site is so great, cause you have other people to help you along and to be nervous with ya!!
