Today is Day 19 for my Silkie girl...I am on CHICK WATCH!

Chicks usually hatch a little sooner under a broody than in an incubator. I am soooooo excited I can hardly stand it.

I already went out there to check on her once this morning, and there was an egg next to her. I picked it up and it was not very warm

I set it in front of her where she could see it, hoping she would tuck it under, but she ignored it. I thought, well, this one is no good and she knows it. So I carefully brought it inside and candled it...it looks perfect

It was dark and full, air cell looked great, and I could even see a little vein. So what's up??? I went back out and lifted her a little and stuck it back under her. I don't know if it cooled off too much or not, we'll just have to wait and see what happens.

I have a young Buff Orp who decided she's also broody (I have another thread started about this one). I tried putting her on some eggs in the Broody House with the Silkie, but she would not settle in. As soon as I opened the door to feed them, she ran out and back to the nest boxes in the coop. I don't think I can trust her with the Silkie babies who are about to hatch...so I put her eggs back under her in the coop nest box. I'll try to move her again later, maybe next week, if her eggs are developing.

I've heard it's usually a day sooner...21 days in an incubator, 20 under a hen. But I'm pretty sure last summer the eggs hatched in 19 days under this same hen. So now I'm all antsy...want to go sit in the broody house with her all day...LMAO!

I was gonna sit in the shed with her all day Monday (our EDD), so now I get to go sit with her all weeekend, huh? LOLOL!!!

I just checked on her again (I know...silly). No babies yet, and she DID keep that egg under her this time.

The last time she hatched eggs in 19 days, it was August in Texas...H-O-T!!! That probably contributed to the early hatch. Even when she got up to eat/poop/etc, those eggs didn't cool down a bit. It was usually close to 100* in the coop. This time it's only April, so it's not that hot yet, so there's a good chance these won't hatch today...probably tomorrow. It's going to be a very long day for me...LOL.
