SET EGGS JUNE 23 ANYONE WITH ME?

Is anyone candling? I just did, wanted to look at a few, just to see what was there. Well... we have one white bantam egg under broody, when looking at it I'm not really sure what is there. I can see a definite air sac, the then there is a large irregular dark sploch in it. Didn't see anything looking like an embryo or any spider veining. Ideas? It didn't stink, like I've read some places so I put it back under her, but I have no idea if it's viable...
Went to look at the others all of which are large brown eggs and I couldn't see through them at all. Tried every flashlight in the house. Do you have to have something special to see through brown eggs?

I'm not that far yet (first set of eggs) but I've seen some really good pics here on candling. Try the section called The Learning Center. Good luck and let us know how it goes :)

This homemade incubator is giving me fits! After a week of dinkin around with the heat, I finally got it to hold a steady temp of 99 for 24 hrs/ (homemade cooler with light bulb, water reservoirs and a cpu fan) So, decided to set 6 eggs.

The remaining 2 are in a smaller, 6-pack sized cooler, with a heating pad, a wash cloth between heating pad and eggs, folded in half covering both sides of the eggs and a candy thermometer. This gave me absolutely no trouble. Been holding a steady temp of 99 degrees on the medium setting on the heat pad. We'll see how this goes!

I just finished my first hatch and if I had relied on candling I would have thrown all of them out, I got 7 chicks, never saw any veining, (only saw the dark blob you are referring to) My vote is to refrain from candling until day 18 and throw away any clear eggs,,,I candled way too much hoping to see something. This time I'm not candling at all.

I have 2 incubators currently working on hatching for me. My 3rd is in transit somewhere (hopefully, not in NeverNever Land). It was supposed to be here last week:( Anyway, I have different hatch dates in the 1st one but they're within one or two days of each other. I set the first set on the 21st -4 Jersey Giants, 7 Bantams (silkies, seramas, cochins, spangled, maybe some surprises). I set the second set on the 22nd 12 Golden Laced Crested Polish & 6 Silkies, and the 3rd set on the 24th- 10 Golden Laced Crested Polish. It has been amazing watching them grow and seeing the changes in them. I had to set up the second incubator 2 days ago and last night I set 6 AmerOrps, 2 EasterOrps, 2 EE, 10 Suprises, 2 cochins, 3 Frizzles, 3 Sizzles, 4 Turkens, 5 Orpingtons, and 3 Call duck eggs got mixed up in the shipment so they got set with the chickens. The 3rd incubator (maybe a 4th) are going to be used when it comes closer to lockdown. This should be interesting. LOL

Did I mention that this is my first time hatching in an incubator? Nervous, doesn't begin to describe it. One of children put it best this morning. "Like waiting on a little brother or sister to get here." LOL

Good Luck with you hatching!

Ok, after much looking at candling online pics, and a much brighter light.
Here's what I think I've got:
1 blood ring - dead egg (the bantam egg I mentioned earlier)
1 infertile egg
5 looked dark, but saw a few veins
1 definite movement of embryo
--(we are on day 8)

I candled the night before last night and ended up with: (these are from the incubator that we have due around the same time)
Starting with 38 eggs
(3) infertile Buff Frizzle Silkies ( after 7 days there was nothing. The other 3 that were put in at the same time showed active movement and veins. I thought they were infertile when I added them but I was unsure. I wanted to give them a chance).
(1) infertile Bantam Surprise (again after 7 days nothing.)
(1)Golden Laced Crested Polish (early death after 7 days)
(2) Infertile Golden Laced Crested Polish (after 7 days)
Now have 34 in that incubator.

2nd Incubator
Started with 43

Last night, I had to throw out an Mille D'Uccle (I didn't even put it in the incubator). It literally looked like it was scrambled inside the shell. When I held the light to the shell, it was super cloudy and I could see the separation take place as I rotated the egg. My heart was broken . I only had a few of those shipped to me. Shipping is so hard on the eggs. I'll be surprised if I have anything make it.
Now, I have 42 in that incubator.
