Set my *FIRST* batch of eggs this AM Jan.21st. UPDATE. I've got 2.pg14

Candled my eggs tonight, took out six duds, and I have two more questionable but the others still look like they are alive

. I can still see veining so I'm guessing they are still alive

even after two blown bulbs with the temp falling both times.

foxrunbantams Today 12:52 am getting ready to set around 150 eggs,bb red, bared rock bantams

wowzer.... that's a lot of eggies...

Yesterday 9:26 pm I got them from a fellow BYC Member. He was in town so we met up. He had three dozen but I dropped a few when putting them in the bater. Then on day 3 I seen a couple that were not fertilized. The 29 is what i had left out of the 36. But still even with my big goof it is still a litte over 80%.

I may have to go that route...

I candled last night and i think I don't have anything moving...

i'm going to check out the progression thread with all of the wonderful pics and see where I stand. I threw out all of my silkie eggs, i guess Mr T, my white silkie roo doesn't know what he's doing yet....I have to talk to that boy!!! I can see nothing in those eggs..
And when i got my box of SLW...the box was a little beat up, but the eggs weren't broke, but now i think they got tossed around quite a bit... I threw a couple of them away too, nothing was in them, just clear....

I don't know about my Wellie eggs, I really can't see through them that well (I need new glasses) shhh.... What I see, is half of most of the eggs, filled with dark....??? and the rest I can see through....This doesn't sound good, does it??? I don't see movement, either...I want to, but I can't really say that I can...

Also 'catch-up day'

. DH gave me a great book and I spent 14 hours reading straight thru' it yesterday and I never even turned on the puter, so must play catch-up reading posts AND getting chores done

. Both bators have been holding perfectly, so am very pleased. Almost halfway thru'!! Before I know it, I'll be hearing peeps and greeting little Abe and Abey

. Will post after I candle. Confess, I'm a bit nervous about what I find in my shipped eggs.

Just FYI -- I have found that the energy saving bulbs just don't put out the heat! Check the wiring, and try 35 - 50w long last Halogen spots. Good luck

We have an old Hovabator Incubator and the directions say to set the temperature to 96 Degrees in the winter. However we keep seeing peoples posts saying they are setting their incubators much higher (closer to 100 degrees). Which is correct? Please keep in mind this was purchased back in 1984 and we're following the directions. Things may have changed. What temperature do you feel I should aim for this time of year? Any feedback would help!

Thanks Worried Newbie

Esce, from what i'm reading, if you have air it's around 99 and if you have no air flow, then it's around 101...But I'm new to all of this hatching, so hopefully someone with more knowledge will pipe in here with more info.....

I finally candled today, day 10. All 12 look OK, but some I couldn't see much. I need a brighter flashlight. They are all EE eggs from a local chicken owner. The bator has been holding temp in the 99.2-99.8 range and humidity has been in the 40-46% range. Except today the humidity was 26%. I forgot to add water yesterday!!!

I would agree with what Melinda said too about the temps. That's the same as what I have read too. I have air in mine and am trying to hold it at 99.5 but it has ranged from 99.1 to 100.3, not too bad I guess for my first attempt.
I also just wanted to share some candling pics with everyone from last night (day 9)....

This is the #4 or #5 egg (can't remember) The pics aren't very good but you can see the veins a bit.

This is the RIR...swimming like a champ still.

They all are moving/swimming but that RIR moves the most out of all of them

(my actuall bday is Feb.2) Yeah, don't normally drink Bailey's that early but I made an exception that day for the celebrations, plus had to keep warm somehow while I was up in the snow
