Setting and hatching in December? Come join us! - Holiday Season hatch-along

Today is day 7 in incubator,I have 2 questions, I have kept them upright do to fact that they where shipped eggs & unable to see in them (Marans). I can tell that the air cell is in the right spot, should i keep them upright or lay them down. The other question is what does anyone use to candle Marans eggs & blue eggs successfully, I have a LED flashlight. I am new to this and advice is welcomed.Thank you

Upgrades complete. had to adjust the plans on the fly. 2x 225w heating elements. heating indicator light. 3rd turning rack. check. Now I'm hungry and ready for sleep
I can't believe you did that in the middle of a set. Way to go!

I think most people lay them down but I have done it both ways. Are you using a turner? I know that when they are in a carton sitting straight up that after they have zipped the top off it is hard for them to get up and out of the shell whereas laying down they kind of fall out naturally. Maybe MarineCorpFarmr can give some advise here.
I use an LED flash that is 1700 lumens and it penetrates Marans and blue eggs with no problem.

Little Wing glad you posted about the up /down and hard to get out standing up.

.Have only had 2 chicks hatch up as i tried it both ways last time( usually lay down whole incubation ) but didnt see either come out. I wondered about that
.

Ive got the coolerbator coming up to temp now, going to move all the hatching eggs to there so i can work on the ultrabator tonight... so pretty much I'm purposely going to allow 60+ eggs to chill while I work.
Think you will be fine from what i read. Brinsea has a bator that has a cool down cycle. The current thinking is that the hen gets off to eat and forage so it must be better. Testing claim you get a 3% better hatch if you cool down They even said up to 12 hours!!
Guess you will find out.!Let us know!..

My RIR are almost half way through the incubation, on wensday they will be. Can't wait till these hatch!! Only have 7 eggs in a 24 egg incubator cause my others were ruined :(. However I'm getting in more from members here hopefully by wensday or thursday and HOPEFULLY the mailing process won't be so harsh to them.
Thats good you are getting more.
I find it so hard to keep the bator even in humidity and use to... temp too.. .with only a few eggs. Some ppl told me more eggs act as heat sinks for the bator temp and humidity.Makes sense
I too am getting more eggs

I do have the 7 day shipped BBS Orp ones incubating now.I am really anxious for Tuesday (day 10 )to see what i have if anything.Might have to take a peek day 7 Sat.
My new eggs (same) will be here about Dec 18th
Hope to avoid some of the xmas shipping rush and the breeder suggested the day .
I expect a 4 day wait... but not 7!!!

I use an LED flashlight, I have learned that I can see the air sac (very useful to make sure they are the right way up), and then
pretty much all i can see is that the egg is filling up. On occasion i have thought i could see a twich inside but not sure. I don't
take them out unless i'm 100% sure. At day 7 none came out but at day 14 you can clearly see who is developing and who is
not. I did day 14 on sunday and I was able to verify 5 infertile. there was one suspect so i left it in. There is definitely more
guesswork with the marans eggs but just keep sniffing the bator and eggs and you will find out if there is a bad one in there soon
enough. As far as upright or not, I have only ever used the egg turner which is an upright position, but on this last hatch the
turner was full and I had to lay several on their sides along the edge and turn them manually, so far all of the manual ones look as
good as the upright ones?

I have 24 blue orps and some swedish flower hen eggs that are on day 7 only one of the SFH eggs shows any development and very few of the blue orps show any thing the rest are clear. I was just wondering how long you guys keep your eggs till you toss them?
