So just for the heck of it I decided to candle my Dom eggs to see if I could find anything &&& guess what?!?!?!

Out of my 18 eggs so 5 have definite veins & growth, 2 have veins & growth but are still questionable (1 has a crack from my oldest trying to turn them before telling me & the other's growth is just slightly smaller than the previous 5), 2 more are questionable about starting growth, & ending with only 9 that I know are completely clear still! YAY!!! I think that is pretty good for shipped eggs & my first try at incubating...

Now fingers crossed that I didn't just jynx myself by sharing the news but I am too excited to hold it it!

Oh & tonight is the end of day 5 for me!

Just got home and I had been letting my young silkies and amaeraucanas door open to the run so they could come out. Well I left it open today while I was at work thinking it was small and tucked into the fence so nothing could get in...well a hawk was in there eating two of my siLkies and one ameraucana. It flew out and surprised me..

So it must have just happened as they were still warm and bleeding. Two were gone and half eaten but one silkie had escaped and run into the coop but she had been stripped of all wing and back feathers and was bleeding everywhere so I quickly put her down.

The coop door had swung shut most of the way and must have trapped the other two out in the run with the hawk. I feel that the ameraucana young roo must had attacked the hawk for the little silke to escape with such bad inures...

I will miss them and I have learnt a valuable lesson. It was my fault thinking a hawk couldn't fly into the run being so small and ahi St the fence ect...

Oh I'm so sorry! I'm getting my run built this week - and this just makes me more determined to make sure it is predator-proof. Such a shame.

Thank you guys!

I have had birds die before but never from anything attacking them...still in some shock but trying to not dwell and move on and learn. I was just asking for this with no top on my run. My two coops are like Fort Knox but I just built this new run for the silkies and had not figured a top for it yet. There will be one this weekend though!

From what I could figure had happened I just know that my little ameraucana roo did his job at the end. He literally saved the other 4 and let the little silkie escape after being caught. I just know he did. He was too fast and smart not to get into the coop with the others.

Anyway, tomorrow is another day! I just checked on everyone and they are fine. I put a little heat lamp on them tonight to help with the shock... Aahh! Ok...night everyone.

So sorry to hear this. It's so hard when something attacks our birds. I cried the first time a dog got 30 of my chickens.
It is a lesson learned and I'm sure you'll be extra careful next time
