Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

You all are a lot stronger than I am, as I'm pretty sure I could never do an eggtopsy on my chicks that don't hatch.  :(   I'll be the weird lady with lightbulb boxes, burying eggs in the backyard.

Lol...that's funny...I do crack some of mine open just to see what happened...but most that make it to lockdown do hatch for me...oh except the last lot of 20  just don't know what happened with those???? Disaster....

I couldn't do an eggtopsy on my first hatch....I felt exactly like you. I even buried the eggs under a tree in our yard and said a prayer. On the next hatch I was so disappointed that only 1/15 hatched I had to see what went wrong. I actually find it very interesting now and because I keep a detailed log on each hatch I can see what day they quit and if anything unusual happened that day. I still bury each egg/chick that doesn't hatch under a tree somewhere on my property.

Lol, I have to put them in a zip lock back and make sure it is closed real well, put on my rubber gloves and a bandana across my nose, you know, just in case the bag breaks. Then try to crack the egg shell with the back of a butter knif through the ziplock bag.
DH laughs his butt off at me. But its okay ! I am sure it looks pretty darn funny.

Guess what!
On their 4th and final try, my girls got what they wanted! Both chicks hatched yesterday afternoon which was day 19. The one under my blue silkie is an OEGB that's black with white spots and the one under my buff-blue is an OEGB that's yellow/brown with a white spot on it's head. I'm so happy! I can't wait to see what these chicks will grow up to look like. I will get pics soon.

My favorite brooder has been half of a 55 gallon plastic drum, it is ugly but it works well, no corners to pile up in, it has air hole drilled around the upper part of it for ventilation and chicken wire on top ( to keep the curious cat out ) Just scrub it out and store it in the shed in between hatches, had two of them, loaned one out, but did not get it back. Will have to make some new ones soon, after 3 years of using it, it is getting a bit banged up and rough looking, not that it was beautiful to start with.

We also made a whiz bang like plucker with one, works pretty good.

Well off of here and headed to the lay house to clean out nest and rake out the floor, we are suppose to get rain here this weekend, we need it so badly.
BTW, was out feeding last night and looked in the roost house to see if the litter needed cleaned out, those silly hens have a cluch of eggs way up under the roost in the corner, have been trying to decide if I need to leave them or not, not sure if the hens are setting on them or not or even how long they have even been there, I know it has been a couple of weeks since I checked the deep litter in there.
Gotta find me some rubber gloves, don't want chicken poop under my nails...... yuck.

When I do them I start by making a small hole in the top of the egg to see if they have internally pipped and then peel away the shell going downward to see the membranes etc. I use a dissecting kit that I bought off of ebay. I wear protective eyewear and must look like a mad scientist when I am doing it.
