Setting eggs today (3/30) anyone else???

Can't wait to see your chooks. I look forward to that.

You are welcome, and I add my thanks for staying with me. You have made this something to look forward to and I have enjoyed hearing about what is happening with Robin and your chicks and thankful to have someone to share the highs and lows of hatching. I hope we didn't discourage anyone else.

I took a few more pictures this evening, then left the camera in the feed room. Not smart. I will get more tomorrow. Tonight I needed a video camera (which we don't have) because the chicks were learning to scratch. Everyone was covered with pine shavings. They were hilarious.

Yay for fuzzy butts!!

Hi! I'm extremely late to this party but I had a hen decide to set around the same time as y'alls. I have one hatch so far and five more eggs.

I found this thread looking for info about how long to wait before giving up and cracking them open. Well, looks like I should wait a couple more days. ??

She has one egg that seems ot have a funny smell. Perhaps that's one that I shouldn't crack? i could be an exploder.

Anyhow, I'm hoping for at least one more hatch. It sounds like all of y'alls hatched within a day or so of the first one. I guess we'll see. The hatch took place yesterday. How long should I give the rest?

Welcome to the hatch-a-long.

1. Were all of the eggs set under the hen at the same time?
2. Has your broody started to spend more time off the remaining eggs, or changed her behavior by moving them in & out of the nest?

I would get remove the "funny smell" egg, to an outside area, please read my post above. I was not exaggerating.

Monday was day 24 for my eggs.

Good luck to you and if you can, please post pictures of your new chick (or chicks).

Yay for fuzzy butts!!

Thanks for the welcome!

She's just gotten off the nest today for the first time (that I know of or would even suspect) and she had the one chick with her at the feeder. I took that opportunity to re-check the eggs and while there's still no pipping, she was very interested in getting back on the eggs. They were cool to the touch when I checked them.

That I know of, she's still interested in the eggs and hasn't pushed any aside, unless she's done so in the last couple of hours. Like I said, she was very interested in getting back on them when she waw me messing with them.

She was also puffing up at me when I came in the pen near her and the baby. It was cute :)

I have the eggs numbered and I know that #3 has hatched and I believe it is #5 that is smelly.

I'll post a pic in a sec . . .

Soooo cute!! What breed? Do you know what day of the incubation she hatched?

Keep an eye (and a nose) on that stinker. If the mama hen rolls it away from her, be ready to remove it. Maybe a plastic bag close by to keep it contained.

Hopefully you have some more chicks today.

Thanks! She looks just like her mother :)

Doesn't look like there'll be more chicks. I dunno, I'm going to give the remaining two eggs a chance, maybe a couple more days. She's still interested in them. I showed them to her and she rolled them back up underneath her quite far.

I candled them and three were no good. Rotten when I opened them. Booo!

(I think this was directed at me, if not, pardon please)

The hen is a Buff Orpington. She was mated with a RIR so the chick is a mix of that. She's going to carry the Buff part for sure. I'd have to re-check the genetics but a BOxRIR should make for a hearty bird that lays well. Definitely makes for cuteness!

I got rid of the sinker egg. Turns out at least three were bad. I let her have two back.
