Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

Well home from the weekend away and 2 more chicks hatched while we were away so we have 4 barred rock babies that were hatched out of our own eggs after the shipped bantam eggs. So for the first go round of hatching with my daughter after not doing any for about 10-15 years I would say SUCCESS! And to top it off my daughter LOVED the experience. Not sure what the next hatching venture will be. Will try to post some baby pics tomorrow am tired after the busy weekend and ready for bed.

Congrats on the babies!! Can't wait to see the pics of the fuzzy butts

I do not use ACV in my FF to start. I let it ferment naturally. I add ACV in my water and drizzle it on top after they get a few weeks old. I started my FF a year ago. I added ACV then..I am still using the same container.

new chicks

Look at all those adorable babies!!! Silkies are so cute!! Congrats!!!

Question, I haven't started my FF yet but I feed dry chick starter and I mix in some DE. Do you ever feed DE to your chicks or chickens? Mine seem to love it and I also feed a supplement called FORCO. Great product I heard about on BYC.

Gallina, hang in with the wierd veining!  I had 3 like that on day 7 - but when I checked them yesterday to relook - they were all moving around!  I was very pleasantly suprised!

Thanks! I'll be curious to see what's happening at day 14! That would be awesome if we exchanged eggs next year ! So cool to think that something we experienced together could then be shared across the country. The sisterhood of the traveling chicken eggs, lol!

Btw, I started my ff yesterday - thanks to you ladies! Couldn't be left on in the cold::D
I did add ACV to mine per Leigh's direction. There were tiny bubbles today, so it's working! I put my goop closer to the woodstove to assist in the fermentation process as we keep our home fairly cool. I know my older flock will eat it as they'll eat anything. I'm curious to see if the chicklets will too.q

Quote: I do not use DE. I would not feed it to my birds. I have not used it in the coop but I can see the benefits in a coop for areas high in humidity. It might at some point be something I would use.
Forco is the same thing you can make in a container on your counter for about $2 a year with just the air, water, and your feed.

I am just finishing up about a week on FF and so far the chickens love it! The chicks need it mixed well with chick food...but they are eating it. My hens however gobble it down even before scratch! That's never happened before! And there eggs this week have been bigger than ever! Not sure if it is related, but I am happy so far with the results and their eagerness to eat it!

I think sharing eggs down the road would be a blast! We have nothing to lose! It would be the ultimate "hatch-a-long"

Hi everyone!

I set my eggs a week ago and candled tonight.....of my 6, I have 3 that have embryos!!

The other 3 I'm pretty sure are a no go, but I'm going to leave them for the time being, until I candle again on Friday, day 10.

The questionable eggs are light blue but very porous and somewhat pitted, very hard to see if there was anything. I think they aren't going to do anything though, because they are heavier than the active 3; plus what I can see in them is just a big dark spot which looks to be the yolk. They don't smell at all. Friday will be D-Day for them.

But I'm soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo EGG-CITED!!!

Hey there! What kind of eggs did you set? Good luck! I too kept my questionable/clear ones in just in case! Our hatch dates are fairly close; I set mine on Sunday a week ago. Wyandottes here:)

I candled my Catdance eggs late last night...it is day 13 and I was going to do it tonight, but started to look at a couple last night and before you know it I had them all done and checked off on my record keeping card! Out of the 18 eggs (original sent was 24) I had only 1 that was questionable! Some have kidney shaped aircells, but they were definitely active! I am pleased to have so many still doing so well! Lockdown in Sunday for me!

Let's see, we'd have west coast, east coast, southern belles and midwest chicks. We'll need to see about some northern girls :yiipchick
