Severe swollen ankle on pekin, arthritis? Infection?

First two photos are from 1.5 weeks ago. Last two photos are from now. I DO NOT have access to an avian vet, this is not an option. He was a free roam pekin, access to 2 acre pond. I believe he’s 1-2 years old. I thought it was bumble foot. I have been soaking in epson salt, first week every day, until a piece of the scab fell off, and I haven’t soaked it because it is raw. I have tried pulling the scab off once it was soft, but it didn’t seem like there was a plug of pus, just raw skin underneath. I put neosporin on it every other day, and use Vetericyn antimicrobial spray too. I wrap it with gauze and vet wrap to keep it clean. And he’s kept in a clean dry area. His hock/ankle is swollen and warm to the touch. He cannot walk on it, but eats and drinks normally. What do I do?

It looks and sounds like bumblefoot to me. Sometimes it just gets that bad. I’ve treated bumblefoot in which I also didn’t seem to find a kernel, but you need to remove the full scab and your photo looks like you did not. Keep treating it how you are after doing that.

I know how frustrating it can be. Bumblefoot can be a lot harder to treat sometimes than you think. It can even take months but you do need to keep treating it.

poor baby how is he now? i also know how frustrating that can be. It can take weeks even months of cleaning and re-wrapping before it’s fully healed, but it’s true. You need to get the rest of the scab off and I think you should try to get him an antibiotic I got the antibiotic amoxicillin from a regular pet store called fish mox it’s made for fish tanks but you can use it for ducks if you find out the right dosage I really think he needs it. @Miss Lydia @casportpony i’ll try to get you more information in the meantime you can continue to soak it and use a scalpel to carefully remove the rest of that scab . my chicken that has bumble foot, which is just about completely healed. Now I kept soaking and peeling off the scab, but had to use a disposable medical scalpel to cut off the rest of the scab carefully it kind of freaked me out when there was blood, but I forced myself to remain calm and complete the job. I’m glad I did. She’s doing really well now.

these are antibiotics i use when my ducks need them . the aqua mox i has mentioned is amoxicillin. the other one is Baytril (enrofloxacin) i got online from a pet bird supply store.

he’s still eating and drinking normally, I gave him children’s Motrin yesterday to help with pain/inflamation. After doing more searching around on here I found posts with similar problems to him, and saw that enrofloxacin 10% was recommended, so I went ahead and ordered that yesterday, it should be here by Friday. I’ll continue to soak him and wait for the callus to soften a bit before trying to get the rest off.

Did a vet have to give you a prescription for the Baytril? I am having a hard time getting any without one.

no i did not have a prescription from a vet . i ordered from an online pet store . i know it’s hard to get any antibiotics without prescriptions anymore, but there may still be a few pet stores that sell antibiotics for fish tanks or for pet birds and you can use those for ducks . i’ll see if i can find one and post it for you
