Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

"Getting" chickens.

I talked a few days ago about my partner's father's ex-batts that he got as 18 months old retired layers. I said they don't lay anymore when ours do, although they are of the same generation and battery than ours.
Well, it seems the man had the same comparative idea that I did, because he actually called his acquaintance at the battery to negotiate on if he could get point of lay pullets for the retired hen price. (It was the case for us because when my partner got there after a two hour drive, all the retired hens had already been given away). His acquaintance agreed for eight, which he went to pick up yesterday. He complained because the price has gone from one euro to two euros.
His keeping conditions are poor (10 m 2 run and a small coop) and they will be cramped, but having seen from the outside the 15 000 hens building and heard the noise, I think they will still be better off with him. I'm sounding like C. now 😱. I didn't dare ask if he would keep the three remaining older hens ; but I will do so quickly, if he doesn't want to feed them anymore I could take them in.

In french slang we would say someone has no face (no honour). I don't know what this translates to in english.

On a nicer note about getting chickens, a longer time ago someone, I think it was Perris, asked about selling together a trio or an existing flock and some of you said they had indeed seen or done that, and that it was a convenient way of doing things for both chickens and owners. At random my partner came upon a selling ad in our equivalent of Craig list very near my parent's place just like this, a bantam rooster with four hens ; the ad states that they can not be separated and that he will only answer to serious people that give him a phone call 👍. The owner is selling an olive tree which is how my partner saw the ad, and next time we visit my parents if it's not sold we will likely buy it. If we didn't already have so many conjugal disagreement about our two roosters I would have considered getting the flock if they are in good condition.

I took this shot two days ago of Théo's flock a few minutes after sounding the general alarm. It was a high risk encounter with an unknown extremely loud possible danger that triggered this...
An angle grinder🤣.
This is the exact thing I was talking about… strutting in circles with tall necks.

@ManueB , lentilles have more proteins. 6% didn’t make sense to me. That’s why I checked. I have been reading 21% and even a list with 25% (rode linzen = red and small lentils, groene - laird linzen are the bigger greenish or light-brown lentils )

I looked up my dry lentils (I never used canned lentils before) and the protein percentages are indeed in your range, 28 for the pink lentils and 24 for the green. The only explanation I can think of is the soaking that comes from cooking the lentils in water means there is a much higher % of water in the final cooked lentils, therefore lowering the protein percentage. If you take 100 grams of lentils and cook them they will weigh much heavier but you will still have the same protein weight. I'm terrible at all kind of number or logical thinking : does this make any sense ?

Random rant : I had actually asked my partner to get "sardines au naturel" when he came back with four cans of cooked lentils. He said the canned fish aisle at the supermarket was too complicated 😂.
Yup, cool tune. A bit heavy on the compressor for the drums but nice bass line and yes I agree, very Ben Harperish. Not a bad thing in my book.
I've always kind of liked him, we still listen to some of his CDs.
Out of subject ramble : I really liked the recent collab with Piers Faccini and Abdelkebir Merkane, all aboard. But I like cultural mishmash, I'm a bit ashamed to say this as so much of so called world music is terrible, and I like gnaoua.
The rooster is Notch. I learn't a lot from Notch. He was a flogging monster when he was young.:rant We got there in the end.:love
Well, then I hope we shouldn't take the analogy as far as to say that you learned something about yourself 😂.
What would you say was the lesson? That even experienced chicken keepers can be surprised by a rooster's agressive behaviour? That caring for a very sick or wounded chicken will build trust ? Or that even an adult rooster can change his behaviour for the worse and for the better ?

but earlier you said
Then I had the idea of looking at the protein content and that was a surprise: the lentils was only 6% (on dry matter) whereas the semolina was 16%. Not what I expected !
esp. '6% (on dry matter)'. I'm confused too. Any chance it was a typo or damage on the can label and it was meant to be 26%?

In any case, what I'm currently reading says "lentils are proportionately high in protein, fibre and nutrients and gram for gram have more iron than steak or chicken, though you may need a squeeze of lemon or lime to absorb it well" (Spector, Food for life, 2022:179)

Sorry I got lost in translation. It actually says "drained" which I suppose means they take away all the water in the can. Legume cans here are filled with water, not sure it's the same everywhere. So they would analyse the solid stuff only.
I looked online at another higher end brand of canned lentils and it was 7%.
Of course this is true for the semolina too, once soaked and cooked the percentage of protein would not say the same.
I've been off and on vegetarian since my teens and have always been told to mix legumes with unrefined cereals for proteins and algae with citrus for iron.

That makes more sense.
