Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

The keeping a cockerel or rooster issue when it comes to BYC is a bit of a mess.
There are countless posts on "rooster issues" and not one single post that I've read seemed to be a problem with the rooster. It's almost always the keeper and the keeping circumstances. What's even stranger is people take the advice of those who obviously can't keep roosters because they keep killing them. If I'm looking for advice I look for advice where people have managed to achieve the result I'm after; not the people who've failed.

I've explained to a number of people on such threads how to resolve the issues, some step by step via PM and almost always they do a bit of what I advise. It's not a do a bit type of solution usually. You have to take all the advise, or none of it.

For some reason the whole business turns into a drama fest and one begins to realise that there is no way in the world these people are ever going to successfully keep males in their groups.

Rain on and off all day. Fed, cleaned out and that was about it. Nobody interested in going out. Everything soaked including the camera hence wet and blurry pictures.
Try again tomorrow.

Think you could send us some of that rain?
What kind of camera do you use? Why not your phone?
Those chickens look relaxed in there.

Looking at the new articles page, I can't help but notice that the formulaic AI generated ones are apparently much better than most of the real members' ones. And this on a little ol' backyard chicken forum. I wonder what we'll all be doing in 5 years' time. :hmm
I'm quite worried about the social effects of AI - what do people become when they outsource their thinking? Also its limitations are not widely understood.

Oh. No tax stash on this computer. I'll have to chip in later.

I have heard how cuddly they are.
Have you actually heard that all roosters are cuddly ? My limited experience with both led me to think that just like human males, some are and some are definitely not. IMHO it's not sufficiently reliable to be a valid reason to get a male 😊.
That has been very convincing. Shad's article on Understanding your Rooster has also made me want one.
I believe that's more reliable information, personally.

Do you not think there may be some lessons in failures ?
For about a year now I thought I could maybe write an article about the mistakes I've made with my roosters, but more generally about giving chickens the right conditions for their social lives.
I've refrained from it exactly for that reason you mention but I'm still hesitant.

Do you mean better relating to content or to quality of writing, or both ?
Amadeo is stunning as always. Wish I could hear his crow 😁.

I used to read a lot of these posts looking for information. I did get some, but the "kill your cockerel is the only solution" loud posters made me really upset and angry. I lost my temper once on a thread that was actually a set-up ; a joke on people who didn't want to cull to prove they were wrong. That decided me to stop reading those.

Throughout this thread and By Bob's there is a lot of information about different settings and how people deal with roosters, including those who see cull as a necessity, and it's a lot more measured.

Yep, that is I think what I was trying to say to @notabitail, who like me, lives in a place he doesn't own. Are your parents ready to make the adjustments necessary to keeping a roo, both regarding settings and behaviour? We discovered we were not, and in particular my partner wasn't. He prefers to stay human rooster to the hens.
