Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

You could get that here, in the S.F. bay area. My sister is bringing the turkey this year, and she looked for pasture raised. That price is right on target. People are becoming aware that it's the humane thing to do.
Yup, I've seen free range organically fed turkeys go for similar prices and if I wanted to eat turkey at Chirstmas that's what I would be buying.

Here's a pretty good overview of the history of Thanksgiving in America:

Just one point from the perspective of a New England born yankee and descendant of the original settlers (not a brag): the Pilgrims and Puritans are lumped in together in much of what you might read. The Pilgrims of Plymouth Rock were separatists, wanted to have their own church, separate from the Anglican church, but the Puritans wanted to purify the church. Their attitudes were different, and it was the intolerance of some of the Puritans that led to the witch trials at Salem. The Pilgrims created a document, the Mayflower Compact, which is the forerunner of the US Constitution.

Tax, showing separation :D

Thanks. I knew all that stuff already, but I didn't know how it translates to today's hyper-capitalist context.

Your chooks are gorgeous!

Thanks for explaining! In some ways it's similar to Australia, of course there are differences too.

Taxes again!

actually I skip the family stuff since covid... My one cousin is the only one still in the area. She used to have a nice feast.. But I'm a hermit and its an good excuse.
My Turkey boys were fighting and I was able to grab one without the other turkeys noticing in the melee . Some chickens did see me carrying him by their coop and freaked.
I had just taken one out of the freezer to thaw a few hrs earlier. I put him back and will have to try that the next time I want to catch one LOL

Friday. Cold and mostly dry.
Solid droppings frm Carbon.

Saturday. Weather got serious. Wet with 45mph wind gusts. We've got three trees down at the allotments. Chickens do not like the wind and were not really interested in coming out for more than some essential grass eating and a quick go at the compost.
Carbons droppings still okayish.

Mow reminds me of Cruella's adopted and only (if we don't take into account her biological children that are still too young to sex) daughter. I hope she goes broody by spring, having picked up some tricks from the bird who raised her. I'd like to finally get some chicks learning the ways of nature from day one

I'm curious about American holidays. Does anyone opt out of a holiday? Will anyone opt out of thanksgiving?

Tax for bringing up a topic that isn't about chickens.

Thanksgiving is one of the few holidays I care about, albeit it's a bit different now that I eat healthy and in moderation instead of just stuffing down whatever in ridiculous amounts. Going to the in-laws' for this one (will be the first Thanksgiving there since I got married; last Thanksgiving at their place was right before getting married).
