Spud has taken to nesting, periodically throughout the day. I think he is feeling like the ladies need to put in more of an effort to provide fluffy little peeps for him to fawn over.... I need to start taking my phone or camera with me everywhere, because it is quite adorable.

Allotment flock is doing well,
Shadrach's allotment apparel is receiving public attention,
Mow (one of the former chicks) has had a case of scaley leg mites but is doing better,
Henry is putting up with Dig (the other former chick) very tolerably!

sometimes when I turn them over even I can see a half dozen very different looking fungal growths.

Have you tried to identify them? Do you have a good field guide you could recommend?

I spoiled a pair of suede shoes and a good raincoat because I was too stupid not changing into my old clogs and old coat first.

that's a reflection of your priorities: chickens first. I think that's admirable, not stupid.

I really haven’t tried. I lot of what I see are hyphae of different colors and sizes.

Are they pretty? I haven't found any really colourful hyphae yet, but the Sheldrake book has some stunning photos of some.

On the guide, never mind. I expect a book written for the funga in your part of the world would be of limited use here anyway. I get the impression the whole field is in such flux that anybody even thinking of writing one would hold fire for now.
