This is what mine looks like.
I used a nine inch cake tin. I think an eight inch tin might leave the cake with a bit more moisture. I think mine is a bit dry compared to yours despite the whiskey. I've got what I take to be dough patches from not mixing properly perhaps.
I think some cherries in the cake might add a touch of sweetness.

They both liked it and one rated the cake 7 out of 10 and the other rated it at 6.5 out of 10.
We do too, but the kids don't. They don't even do fruit cake for weddings these days it seems
(though I have to admit the idea of keeping the top tier for the christening of the first child always struck me as pushing the storage qualities of it a bit
)
