Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I sure wish my chickens hadn't read your article.
Théo used to escort the hens to lay without them asking but since a few days he stopped and each morning all the layers are screaming for help to secure the nests.
I don't know if it's due to the chick's hatch, or to them spending too much time on BYC.

I wish I could give you some sun and borrow some of that rain.
Mine also go for band aids and I have a serial Kleenex killer too. I really have to pay attention to keeping my pockets zipped because once she actually gobbled one before I had the time to pull it away from her beak.
I wonder if it's not a good thing from the chickens pov that the building takes time because they will be really used to the coop when it's ready for them to roost in it.
That's the plan, or excuse depending on ones point of view.:p
It's how I've gone about coop changes in the past and I've done a few over the years.
I expect to have the normal recalcitrants who will need persuading that the new coop is the place to be.
Further, at some point the old coop run will be attatched to the new coop with a new gate on the front. This should give a major increase in nightime security, a matter I'm getting increasingly concerned about.

Venka's back! :ya Turned up at 5.30, looking none the worse for wear. Ate like a horse, and is now chilling with the flock under a bush by the back door :D I am so relieved she didn't meet a nasty end :bow
Oh that is great news! And for those of us who were smitten by that photo of her can we see some more pictures. I think she is a really beautiful hen.

no I didn't either. She's not a tree hugger, and I have no idea where she was hiding. I had resigned myself to her loss last night, and was happy that another bird had gone broody while I still had some of her viable eggs. I've no regrets about setting her on Venka's eggs, but I am going to have to do something about accommodation here...
