I can't say I understand people who prefer to hatch in incubators. Each to their own, but I like not being able to interfere much - interfering is stressful!
I am doing a almost side by side right now. Broody w/7 eggs vs incubator w/18 eggs (#'s reflect 1 candle of incubator eggs to remove unfertile egg and late candle and removal of unfertile for broody)
Outside Temps 88° w56 humidity on average, mostly clear skies.
Broody hatched 3, squashed 1 chick dead that then possibly contaminated the last 3 eggs. I pulled, cleaned, candled, tapped and returned after cleaning up and called it yesterday on day 2 of hatch. So she, Pi'i a 2yo second time mom hatched 3 beautiful babies out of 7 viable and I too sat on a stump for hours watching, listening and enjoying. She/they are truly beautiful.

Yesterday, about 15 hours after lockdown of incubator, 1 pip and electric went out 🤦‍♀️ Was able to hook up generator within 10 minutes and had to reset incubator. So now roughly 30 hours after lockdown I have 5 hatched, 5 pipped. No clucking and bonding but beautiful in its own way. I look forward to meeting them ♡

So far my takeaway is that the incubator is easier but I do one candle after day 10 and just be sure to fill water. It has a pretty good hatch rate.

The broody is waaaay more fun and I fretted more about her and her- food, hydrate, vitamins and bugs etc. She did well. Both needed my help a little bit in this process thus far.

I incubate no more than 6 eggs at a time, and give them to a broody. No broody, no hatch.
I did have a new broody quit during her last week. It was a stormy night, I think she just got scared. 1 out of her 3 eggs hatched. The other two were clear.
I put the chick in with some bantam chicks that were a week or two old. He is doing great, and is as happy, as a chick without a mom can be.
The bantams were rescued from the feed store, where some had died of pasty butt. Rescuing cost me 3.79 each. They all are still living but one. Last year I bought 8 chicks under the same circumstances. One died, one is a loveable runt, and the rest thrived, as much as a chick without a mother can.
I kind of wish they would ban feed store chicks, or else make employee education mandatory.
I'd much rather have my hens raise the chicks.
I lost my older rooster a few days ago. His hatch mama made the awfullest racket when he died. He was her first chick, and they were very close. I honestly believe she, and some of my other hens are morning his loss. He was a great rooster.

Sorry for your loss.

I had a rooster that took on a jake and got killed. Several of his hens seen it and seemed depressed. The ones that didn't were calling for him at roost time. It was sad.

I honestly believe she, and some of my other hens are morning his loss. He was a great feed store I use as they have slowed bringing chicks in. The other feed store is filthy and creepy and the other big feed store only brings in RSL's. I am happy to be of service to this family and needed my incubator to help. Better than getting chicks shipped for sure or the lesser of the 2 evils IMO.
The feed store I use referred these local people to me as they have slowed bringing chicks in. The other feed store is filthy and creepy and the other big feed store only brings in RSL's. I love borage, but it hates my place. I've only ever managed to grow one or two, that flower in late September so it doesn't last and they don't reseed. It annoys me as it's supposed to be so easy to grow 🤬, it's the same with the nasturtiums.

This year I'm starting a bunch of both inside, hopefully I'll be more successful.
Hey I have the same problem 😂
My borage does not like to reseed and my nasturtiums die all the time ...

That is good you can supply chicks instead of the feed store. The whole concept of shipped chicks in a feed store just does my head in. We don't have this system here. Very difficult to get day-old chicks here.
I imagine I'll be cranking out the incubator if I want to get chicks come summer-time.
