Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

Not many under 50's on this thread I would think.
I was under 50 ... 17 years ago ;)

I sell my eggs for the same as Costco and that is a good deal.
 You must be operating at quite a loss.

Exactly. Money should not be involved in politics AT ALL.
The Supreme Court disagrees. Money is "free speech", corporations can talk as "loud" as they like with no restriction.

We are trying to get to that zero debt point. Plan to list our home very soon. That will go a long way towards getting us financially stable for the rest of our lives.
Shy of dying, I guess you'll be moving from a place with high house prices to one with low prices?

@bruceha2000 well... not making a profit. It I can make a little feed money back I am happy. With chicks and everything else I am just hoping to lessen costs, help my neighbors and get a little good karma plus add some self-sufficient awareness and therapy if possible. I keep plugging along and learning as I go. I don't really know how to do anything for profit... 🤦‍♀️ just not wired that way lol

I agree about educating folks. But I have found that the majority opinion in my neck of the woods is that animals exist to serve and be served to people. I find it very barbaric, tbh. But I don't hold it against anyone. I just do it my way. I am almost vegan, but I've been fortunate to find a local gal who milks her goats and still lets the dams keep their kids. Pre-made foods like bread are my only hang up. I just haven't made that leap yet. It's a personal struggle, as silly as it sounds. I can imagine the eye rolls and the scoffs I get as I'm explaining these things - lol!

My other hope is that when my chickens are all gone, I may just get rescue hens or start a bachelor flock. But it will be a while, hopefully. I love the individuals who comprise my flock. I am not in a place where I can put myself above their right to live their little chicken lives. Again, just me. Not proselytizing.
No scoffs or eyerolls, very much respect your stance. Thank you for sharing it. (I'm obviously waaay behind in this thread, lol!)

I did look at the Frog coops but they don't make one as big as the Solway. From what I can see, the Frog coops are a better design and look better made.
I'm still happy with the Solway. See how it does over the winter.
I think weight and manoeuvrability become an issue with big coops - as you found with that Solway. I've got 2 medium and I large; I acquired the large first and I struggle with lifting it (which I do several times a year to move them to fresh ground), so opted for mediums when I needed to expand. I suppose the weight's inevitable with the thickness and density of the recycled agricultural plastic of which they're made. I expect yours to do fine over winter - another upside of the weight is that it shouldn't blow over, even if the winds do blow strong on your hilltop!

I practically have to beg people to save me their egg cartons... and they still toss them in the rubbish... Big business being allowed to bring this plastic in on this scale to a little island with NO plan??? WTF!
I can understand some people thinking it's unhygienic to reuse cardboard cartons, especially if there's been a breakage, but plastic ones can be washed and reused. I use cartons that are made out of recycled plastic (surprisingly few things are it seems, so even when good people put their used plastic in the recycling, apparently little of it actually gets to be recycled into something else), and my customers are very good at returning them...so much so, in fact, that a huge box of them I bought before Brexit (because they're made by a firm in Austria) is hardly started! :thBut I'm not complaining :D. I'm glad I've got (mostly) conscientious customers.

I wasn't expecting much I admit. I've tried a pop up, right on, sustainable, renewable, natural, environmental market before. Lots of good intentions but not a lot else going for them. I counted 35 visitors between 9.30am and 5pm. I will have missed a few because I went and did a bit of shopping with my youngest.
This is Bristol, not some small country town. The venue was in a high traffic area for independant shops. There is something very wrong with a venue that can't market itself well enough to only attract such a small number of people.

that's such a shame. I'm beginning to think the British have stopped viewing the act of going shopping as a leisure activity, which is a good thing for the planet if not for the economy. Your lamps are beautiful. If people bought a few choice pieces instead of hoards of tat, the world would be a much better place.
