Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

I used to write in BIG LETTERS: please return carton ~ & no~one ever did. Then a lovely lady @ church saved all the cafe cartons from where she worked & my neighbours have twigged so now I have more cartons than I can possibly use. :idunnoChanging people's habits can be really hard.
I rarely see an egg cartons returned, or donated. I wrap eggs, 6 at a time, in newspaper.

My solution to that was to offer $1 off when bringing me a carton and it works great! I sell my eggs for the same as Costco and that is a good deal. I just want it to be my town neighbors etc who get the deal.
It does not solve the leakage of give aways though and that breaks my heart a little. Bottom line is people should feel horrified tossing out their plastic like it is bathwater. That part is what I have the biggest problem with.
I did purchase a fancy stamp and sticker and am hoping it helps...View attachment 3238100

And with the selling of chicks I am feeling super inspired today. Thinking about a website... lol. Obviously I forgot to take my meds....
I give away my eggs. They usually go to my church. Lots of older folk struggling with the rising cost of living so offering a discount on returned cartons is obviously non workable. Our cartons are cardboard so they recycle very well & are biodegradable. I just like to get as much use out of each one as possible, though recently I have been cutting the cartons in half so more people can get something, rather than a few taking everything. At present neighbours & family have been getting the excess as I haven't been well enough to travel.
ETA: I love those bags! What a brilliant idea!

I wasn't expecting much I admit. I've tried a pop up, right on, sustainable, renewable, natural, environmental market before. Lots of good intentions but not a lot else going for them. I counted 35 visitors between 9.30am and 5pm. I will have missed a few because I went and did a bit of shopping with my youngest.
This is Bristol, not some small country town. The venue was in a high traffic area for independant shops. There is something very wrong with a venue that can't market itself well enough to only attract such a small number of people.

Such a shame...😕

I do my giveaways when it is hot and I want the girls to be slow and as stress free as possible. -So, after collecting eggs to hatch, before worming my flock and with a molt in there somewhere- Then I do the building back up of flock in time for fall and I will try and recoup costs till early summer. And yes, people on hard times are always first ♡♡♡ The elderly have pensions, own their homes, have insurance. I really try to focus on the families who are working hard against some hard odds. Rents are insane, employers cheap and food and gas expensive. I was there as a single mom and really loved people's kindness. It went a long way.
I love how kind and resourful folks on this site are ♡ inspiring!

Well, somehow I missed a few pages, catching up now.

Not many under 50's on this thread I would think.
A few!
I have a few years to go
Me too…no rush, though! 😂
Although I believe we should eat less meat, raising a war between organic cattle raisers and vegans, as sometimes seems to be the case in the US, is just a way of again not addressing the real problems of delocalized mass production in monocultural systems.
Easier to control the masses when you pit one side against the other.
The pandemic was a (horrible) opportunity for us (the world) to reset. But we did not. Big money complained and even the best politicians bended.
Exactly. Money should not be involved in politics AT ALL.
People are being forced to address this in part here with food shortages & the escalating price of groceries. My entire extended family has thought me mad for keeping chickens. Now they are @ my doorstep begging eggs because eggs are not to be had @ the supermarket. I have 1 DIL about to ask her landlord if she can keep a couple of chickens. I told her if she was prepared to wait I would be doing a hatch & I was prepared to give her a couple of pullets, if I have them. My neighbour is also after a 2nd hen as a mate for her lone 1. And if the pandemic is anything to go by pullets, chicks & POL will be impossible to acquire shortly as demand exceeds availability. :idunno
One of the reasons I felt no guilt processing our roosters we hatched this year (one more group to go next month). I will continue to do 1-2 hatches a year to 1. Ensure the family can have chicks if need be (over 30 cousins not including their spouses & children, and I’m the only one with an incubator. That way we aren’t at the mercy of a broody).
2. Get as many eggs as possible in case of a true shortage.
3. Provide hatching eggs & chicks to the community if needed.

I also have a garden that produces enough for my immediate family, plus extras of some veggies (beans, tomatoes, cucumber, greens) to share with family & neighbors. Working on a plan for canning and freezing for this winter. I’ve never been so nervous about having enough until this year. DH & his two cousins will also be deer hunting to see how much can be put up for the family.

Side note: I am a former vegan but started having health issues due to lack of vitamins, so I have incorporated more animal products back in and feel 100 times better. I will not touch meat from a factory farm. We hunt our own, grow our own, or buy from sustainable farmers who treat their animals with kindness. I think the more we do on our own or locally is the best way to help the environment.

Tax:
The sweetest cockerel I hatched. He is a good boy so far and a keeper and will not be going to the crock pot. 😊 He will live out his life on the family farm.
